Arnette NSW Junior Surfing Titles end in style
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 2 August, 2009 : - - Boomerang Beach, NSW -- The final day of the Arnette NSW Junior Surfing Titles will forever be remembered thanks to some of the most amazing junior surfing performances in recent time.
With four champions crowned, and some blistering surfing action on show, Boomerang Beach proved to be the playground for some of the world’s best under 18 surfers with Tyler Wright (Lennox Head, NSW), Ellie-Jean Coffey (Crescent Head, NSW), reaping the highest rewards.
With the 18 years girls division headlining the fifth day of competition, current ISA World Junior Champion Tyler Wright stole the show. Delivering one of the most dominant, amazing and flawless performance ever seen in female competition, Wright amassed a combined heat total of 19.50 (out of a possible 20).
“It was probably the best heat I’ve ever surfed, Wright said after defeating Codie Klein (Kingscliff, NSW), Rachel Campbell (Stanwell Park, NSW) and Philipa Anderson (Merewether, NSW). Phil Courtney, Surfing NSW Head Judge, echoed those sentiments. “That was probably the most amazing female heat I have seen in all my years judging surfing competitions,” he said.
Landing a massive grab-rail air, Wright only caught three waves throughout the 20 minute affair – 10, 9.50 and an 8 (out of a possible 10). “I felt really in sync with the ocean and was able to grab the best waves out there,” Wright continued. “This event is a very crucial stepping stone for me, I want to get back and defend my ISA World Title.”
Ellie- Jean Coffey joined Wright on the podium, claiming her third successive Arnette NSW Junior Surfing Title. Taking advantage of the pristine conditions, Coffey looked well suited at Boomerang Beach. “I felt very comfortable surfing the right-handers all week, so I’m stoked that it all came together for me.” Having blown minds all week, Coffey was the rightful victor after an amazing week of surfing.
Defeating Joshua Hay (Copacabana, NSW), Jake Scott (Malabar, NSW) and Soli Bailey (Suffolk Park, NSW), who finished second, third and fourth respectively, Chapman soared to victory with a score of 14.50 (out of a possible 20).
“It was a great contest and the level of competition gets better and better every year,” Coffey said having defeated Stephanie Single (Lennox Head, NSW), Fiona Casey (South West Rocks, NSW) and Sarah Kokkin (Merewether, NSW).
With surfers in all divisions qualifying for the Arnette Australian Junior Surfing Titles there was plenty at stake. In the 14 years divisions it was the sibling of Wright who added to the already well-adorned trophy cabinets of the highest-profile family in surfing.
Michael Wright (Lennox Head, NSW) won a see-sawing tussle with Jack Germain (Port Macquarie, NSW), Josh Szele (Warilla, NSW) and Jeames Young (Yamba, NSW), whilst Cali McDonagh (North Curl Curl, NSW) tasted her first victory defeating Holly-Sue Coffey (Crescent Head, NSW), Alyssa Lock (Tweed Head, NSW) and Veronica Charles (Cronulla, NSW).
After the dust had settled on a memorable five days at Boomerang Beach, the final word goes to the Courtney. “This has been the highest standard of junior surfing I have seen in 25 years,” he said. “Not only in the older divisions, but the biggest improvers have been the younger kids – it’s scary to see where it will go next year.”
