Arnaud Exits Competition as Oakley Pro Junior eyes showdown > en francais ci-dessous
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 August, 2009 : - - Lacanau Ocean -- The ASP Grade-2 Oakley Pro Junior got closer to its business end today in clean two-foot (0.5 meter) waves and off-shore winds making the set-up very attractive for all remaining competitors.
After Round 4 of the Men’s division was completed in the early morning, the Women’s event could kick-off and give the remaining regional title contenders their start in the final event of the ASP European Women’s junior tour. Ten heats remain before both champions are crowned tomorrow and the ASP Women’s European Junior champion raises her 2009 trophy.
Current ratings’ leader and reigning ASP European Women’s Junior champion Alizee Arnaud (Hossegor, FRA), 18, was eliminated for the event’s biggest upset leaving an open door to her close followers to clinch the title tomorrow. Arnaud, who has been dominating the 2009 season with no worse than a 3rd place finish in three events, was not able to find her way out of the Quarterfinals, a decisive elimination that could keep the Hossegor resident from claiming a second consecutive regional crown.
Taking advantage of the situation was current ratings’ No. 2 Johanne Defay (REU), the 15-year-old competitor looking to better her overall points’ total to possibly clinch her maiden regional crown tomorrow. Defay, who has had a stellar season with a couple of runner-up results in three events, was able to keep the pressure off and confidently advance through to the Semifinals.

“I was pretty stressed before the heat knowing it was going to be an important one,” Defay said. “It was a close battle and Lea (Mengual) got close to taking that second place from me but it went well in the end and it’s a big relief. I am trying not to think about the ratings and I will see how things go tomorrow.”
Should Defay make the final tomorrow and she would be almost untouchable for a first ASP European Women’s Junior crown, the only potential threat coming from Basque performer Garazi Sanchez (EUK) who remains in the hunt. “It’s been a hard day and the waves were pretty tricky,” Defay said. “I know tomorrow is going to be intense and I will have a good dinner and rest to be as ready as possible for the finish.”
Sanchez, who came-up with impressive surfing today to post the event’s highest single wave score with a 9.50 point ride left the water relieved with a Semifinal berth secured. Rated No. 3 before the ASP Grade-2 Oakley Women’s Pro Junior, Sanchez’s result today gives her a good opportunity to end inside the coveted ratings’ Top 2 and a ticket for the ASP World Junior Championships (WJC) next January.
“It was kind of up and down with the waves and I was lucky to catch that one right at the beginning of my Quarterfinal,” Sanchez said. “My first heat was tough in Round 2 and I am glad I got that big score. The race is so tight at the moment and I don’t want to think about it. It makes me nervous and a lot of the girls are right there in reach of the Top 2 finish so I will see tomorrow.”
Not being concerned by the intense ratings’ battle taking place at Lacanau, South African representative and impressive competitor Bianca Buitendag (ZAF), 15, showed the European contingent she was to be considered a major threat for the event crown. Buitendag, who landed in France a few days ago to train for the event, won all of her bouts today displaying perfect-style maneuvers to set pace and be part of tomorrow’s showdown.
Defending Oakley Pro Junior champion and reigning ASP Women’s World Junior champion Pauline Ado (Hendaye, FRA), 18, was another of today’s heat winners. Ado, who won the event last year in pumping six-foot waves, managed to adapt her solid surfing to the small conditions and will be amongst the potential crown holders.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 August, 2009 : - - Lacanau -- Après les quatre dernières séries des 1/8èmes de finale homme du Oakley Pro Junior du Soöruz Lacanau Pro, ce matin la plage de Lacanau Océan voit l’entrée en lice des jeunes surfeuses internationales où les françaises font figures de favorites.
Après une pause à la mi-journée dûe à de très faibles conditions de vagues à marée haute, la 3ème journée du Oakley Pro Junior se déroule jusqu’en fin d’après-midi, réservant les phases finales pour ce dimanche.
La performance de la matinée revient à Joan Duru qui écrase ses adversaires en sortant un 9,63 points sur 10 grâce à un enchaînement de rollers incroyablement rapides et précis. Il se qualifie pour les ¼ de finale, tout comme son homologue landais P-V Laborde. Ce dernier a réussi à en découdre face au bouillonnant brésilien Thomaz Petterson. Mais P-V obtient sa qualification de justesse en finissant second de sa série, derrière le brésilien Charlie Brown qui totalise là le meilleur score de toutes les séries du Oakley Pro Junior : 17,00 points sur 20.

Les jeunes iliens français passent également leur tour avec Charly Martin, 18 ans, de la Gaudeloupe : "le circuit Junior ASP est ma priorité, même si je fais quelques étapes WQS qui me permettent une expérience idéale du niveau que je rencontrerai dans quelques années." Charlie est également très excité de concourir sur le Oakley Global Challenge : "C’est notre objectif à tous : on adore Bali, ce sont très souvent des conditions de rêve pour cette finale.".
Très professionnel, il gère sa série de main de maître affichant un honorable score de 13,60 points, juste nécessaire pour l’emporter, écartant ainsi Rudy Maréchal du team Soöruz. Le réunionnais Maxime Huscenot continue sur sa route grâce à une courte victoire avec 46 centièmes d’avance sur son collègue de l’île, Damien Chaudoy, également qualifié avec sa seconde place. Ces surfeurs réunionnais laissent sur le carreau le valeureux gillocrucien Tristan Guilbaud, bien meilleur sur son reef vendéen que sur les beach break canaulais.
La compétition féminine du Oakley Pro Junior, après avoir débuté avec le tour de qualification ce matin, se déroule depuis le début d’après-midi sur la marée descendante, plus propice pour découvrir légèrement le banc de sable du spot de la Plage centrale de Lacanau et donner des vagues, certes petites, mais d’une qualité proche de la perfection avec un pic droite-gauche.

Sur ce terrain de glisse idéal pour ces jeunes filles, les deux locales canaulaises Justine Dupont et Fanny Brice respectivement première et seconde de leur série, se qualifient pour les ¼ de finale, devant la basque Lee-Ann Curren, fille de l’ancien champion du Monde Tom Curren, et la vendéenne vice-championne du monde ISA 2008 Marie Dejean qui se qualifient également pour les ¼ en alignant le meilleur score de la journée avec un 15,33.
Sans surprise, la basque championne du monde junior Pauline Ado et la landaise Alizée Arnaud, tenante du titre du Oakley Pro Junior 2008 de Lacanau, passent leur série toutes les deux avec une seconde place provoquée par une certaine résistance en la personne de la française Joanne Panzini et de la sud-africaine Bianca Buitendag
LAST MINUTE : Profitant des conditions qui s’optimise en fin de journée, les organisateurs lancent les ¼ de finale junior femme avec l’élimination du Oakley Pro Junior de Lee-Ann Curren et Alizée Arnaud. Justine Dupont, Marie Dejean, les Joanne Panzini et Defay, Pauline Ado et Maud Lecar sont qualifiées pour les ½ finales. Elles retrouvent les sud-africaines favorites Tanika Hoffman et Bianca Buitendag.
Demain, les ¼ de finale hommes sont lancés dès 8h00, suivent les ½ finales et finales hommes et femmes. La remise des prix est prévue vers 18h00.
