Australian Longboard Titles continues to fire
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 August, 2009 : - - Port Macquarie, NSW -- Day three of the Australian Longboard Titles went from strength-to strength today as competition rushes towards the pointy end of the event. With another pristine day of waves and weather on show throughout the Port Macquarie region, today saw a change of scenery as competition moved to Rainbow Beach.
Relishing the change of scenery was Sam Walker (Freshwater, NSW) who was impressive in her second round heat. Having only begun competitive longboarding a mere three years ago, Walker showed skills, style and poise which suggested otherwise, surfing like a veteran. “I had a really heat out there this morning,” Walker said.
At only 18 years of age Walker represents the new-school of Australian longboarders – a crop of talent that looks set to re-write the sport of longboarding. “I’ve only been doing it for such a short time, but I enjoy it so much and have heaps of fun.”
Current event standout Georgia Young (Swinbourne, WA) continued her excellent run of form this morning stepping up in the absence of four-time Australian Champion Chelsea Williams (Tweed Heads, NSW). Having effectively owned the title over the past four Williams is missing from competition this year, but the likes of Young, Walker and Samantha White (Culburra, NSW) are battling it out as heir apparent to the 2009 crown.
With 23 Australian titles to be awarded in 21 divisions, and the best surfers across the nation converging upon the wave-rich Port Macquarie region, this morning saw a simmering selection of world-class talent. The first heat of the Open Men indicated as such with current ASP World Longboard Tour (WLT) number one dropping the performance of the Festival thus far, demolishing the field with an amazing score of 18.25 (out of a possible 20).
Ingelby, who had a accrued his heat total within the first five minutes of the heat, was in another world, leaving awarning shot for all competitors as he marched towards the quarter finals.
In 2009, with an expanded festival program, The Country Energy Australian Surf Festival also boasts live music, surf art and photography, retro surfboard displays, surf film screenings and surfing education courses to appease the palates of all cultural enthusiasts, or just the humble surfer.
