Wade Goodall beats Johnny Law to nab Bill's goods

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 August, 2009 : - - The much-hyped swell from Hurricane Bill had every surfer in the US booking flights for the East Coast. Wade Goodall and crew left California behind and upon arriving in New Hampshire (whose state motto happens to be; Live Free Or Die) found the beaches closed due to the 'dangerous' five foot surf.

Wade risked being arrested to put on a show for the crowd. We called him up to hear what the hell it was all about, and found Wade in New York, about to hit the piss.

Hey Wade, how are you mate?

Good, good. I just got in to New York. It’s massive and daunting, we had to catch all these buses and trains with our boards. It was fuckin’ hectic. So now we’re getting pissed.

We heard you almost got arrested for surfing in New Hampshire. What happened?

They closed all the beaches off, there were policemen and fuckin’ lifeguards and the lifeguards are just high school lifeguards that are rented for the summer. They’ve never seen swells that big. There are four to five foot waves there in the winter, but it’s really rare for it to get that big in the summer. They were freaking the fuck out basically, so they shut the beach. You couldn’t surf, you couldn’t swim, you couldn’t do nothing. But everyone was so amazed with it, there were like hundreds of people on the beach just watching the waves.

Did you try telling the police and lifeguards that it’s ok, you do this for a living?

Nah, fuck that, we didn’t talk to ‘em. We were just like Fuck it, we’ll just go out and plead ignorance if they grab us. We had it fully planned out; it was a fuckin’ proper attack, they were never going to get us. I’m a stupid Australian and I don’t know no laws, and my friend Dane Ward was gonna say he’s a mute. Well he wasn’t gonna say much, I was gonna tell them that he’s a mute and because he couldn’t talk, he couldn’t tell me the laws in the state of Maine.

It was fuckin’ rad. They were whistling at us from the beach trying to get us in. We were catching waves and the crowd would go so fucking mad, you’d do the shittest turn or like an air off the back and the crowd of hundreds of people on the beach would just erupt.

So it was like an expression session or something?

Basically, it was just like that. It was one of the raddest things I’ve ever done.

We stayed out till the crowd started to come out.

More at So people came out surfing just because you were?

Yeah. Well eventually the lifeguards have to go home, hahah. So we just stayed out till they did and then there was that many people, the cops couldn’t see us in the crowd. The perfect crime.

So you headed over to Maine to catch the hurricane swell? It didn’t look like it got as good as they were saying.

Yeah I was in California and it’s been pretty shit so when I saw the forecast I thought I might as well try. I wanted to check it out over here anyway, I’ve never been over here (to the East Coast) before. Fuck, it was pretty rad. We ended up scoring, I think we got it as good as anywhere. It didn’t turn out as good as anyone was talking about, but it never does when everyone talks about it for a week.

You just moved to the States. How’s that going?

I was gonna move here for the rest of the year but now I’m not. I’m just staying for six weeks, then I’m going to head home and do QS’s for the rest of the year. Bit of a change of plans but it’s been hell fun. We’re on the hell trip at the moment, we flew over here, went up to Maine to surf and now we’re hanging out in New York City for a few days. Then we’re off to San Francisco, there’s a big music festival on and then we’re going to drive down the Californian coast back to San Clemente. It’s going to be sick.

Next week Binnsie and our Hot 100 crew are flying to San Francisco and driving down the coast.

Oh yeah, he is too. We’ll fuckin’ be able to meet up! That will be rad.
