Tasmania's big-wave season kicks off at Shipstern's

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 September, 2009 : - - Tasmania's big-wave season may have started late this year, but it has certainly arrived with a bang.Last week's foul weather whipped up the biggest southwest swell to hit our beaches in the past 12 months.

Brothers Tyler and James Hollmer Cross have become synonymous with Shipstern and were the first to brave the Tasman Peninsula's stormy conditions. Waves 10m high were exploding beneath the cliffs and at times looked impossible to ride.  The brothers were towed into a few waves by a jet ski and, despite coming unstuck on some occasions, survived the ordeal unscathed.

The usual fleet of national and international surfers were absent, allowing locals like Richardson, James Hick, Danny Griffith and Alex Zawaski a day of uncrowded huge surf.  Despite 40-knot westerly winds, photographer Andrew Chisholm sat on the back of a jet ski for six hours to capture the day's events.

Inevitably, there were spectacular wipeouts, some so extreme that the surfers were held under for the passing of two waves, but the local thrill-seekers were thankful for one of the biggest days ever documented at Shipstern.
