Waterman's team takes top honors at Catalina Classic
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 September, 2009 : - - Manhattan Pier -- Conditions were epic and the competition was fierce during the 34th annual Catalina Classic, presented by Honolua Surf Co. At six am the horn went off and an all-time record of 106 paddlers began a 32-mile journey from Catalina Island to Manhattan Beach, CA.
In the end it would be Watermans’ Tyler Anderson (#34) claiming first place with a time of 5:16:23 and securing his place on one of the most coveted perpetual trophies in the sport.
Flat waters and clear skies held up for the duration of the event on Sunday leaving competitors with no excuses and lots of water between them and the finish line. Tyler Anderson took and early lead and extended it to take 1st by a margin of four minutes and ten seconds over previous champion and perennial top-three finisher Ryan Addison of Malibu, California, finishing in a time of 5:16:23.
Fellow Watermans’ paddler and 2008 3rd place finisher, George Plsek, battled it out with Ryan Addison after rounding the R10; finishing in 3rd place overall improving his 2008 time by over three minutes to come in a 5:23:33.
Although the Unlimited class often gets all the glory it is the Stock class that usually puts on the best show and this year was no exception. The duel between the top three finishers started early and lasted throughout the race with all three paddlers within a half-mile of each other as they crossed the finish line. Watermans’ paddler Shane Scoggins, Santa Barbara, fought off fellow team mate Eric Abbott, Hawaii, mid race before making a push to over take front runner Tito Bourget, but in the end it would be Bourget taking first in class with a near record breaking time of 5:55:48. Scoggins took 2nd in 5:58:07 closely followed by Abbott in 3rd at 6:02:28.
