ASP European WQS Series Situation Room: Duru's Domination

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 September, 2009 : - - Capbreton -- Since the first event back in April at La Sauzaie in France, the race for this year's ASP European title has been dominated by rising phenomenon 20-year-old Joan Duru (Ondres, FRA).

After a serie of exceptional performances that saw the potential ASP World Tour qualifier rise to No. 7 on the ASP Wrld Qualifying Series (WQS) in eight months, all figures are showing a clear advantage for Duru's regional campaign who now leads te ASP European WQS ratings by almost 3000 points...

From his first major win at the ASP WQS 4-Star Protest Vendee Pro in April to his history-making victory in the ASP WQS 6-Star Sooruz Lacanau Pro that made him the first French surfer in 27years to claim the title, Duru has confirmed the immense potential that many have seen in him for years.

With his usual laid-back competitive approach mixed to his untouchable tchnical skills that allow him to pop any progressive maneuver as well as classic power-turns, Duru's repertoire has convinced judges all across Europe this year, the Ondres resident having made the Semifinals of the ASP WQS 6-Star Prime O'Neill CWC Scotland by Swatch for one of his best results ever.

2009 seems to be Duru's year and it's hard to see anyone catching-up with the potential ASP Top 45 man eventhough the last couple of events have been pretty tricky for him with two direct eliminations...

Just as last year's ASP European Champion Tim Boal (Anglet, FRA), 26, who went to qualify for the ASP World Tour the same year he clinched the regional title... As ASP Top 45 member Aritz Aranburu (Zarautz, EUK), 23, did in 2007 when he qualified for the elite circuit... Duru is currently in good position for the double-crowning and all eyes will closely follow the ratings' evolution, both international and regional, before celebrating another success from the new European star.

For the third consecutive year, it seems that the change in the points allocation that changed at the beginning of 2007 to count all ASP WQS 1 to 6-Star events to crown the regional champion has reflected the exact level of our regional champions, the ones performing better in all major events in Europe claiming a title that has reflected the rise of the European contingent on the international stage.
