BRITISH TEAM FOR WORLD JUNIOR SURFING GAMES ANNOUNCED
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 September, 2009 : - - The team that will fly the British flag at the 2010 World Junior Surfing Games in New Zealand has been selected, following the Billabong/VW British Junior National Championships at Fistral Beach at the weekend.
An 18-strong squad was named in August, following the announcement that the 2010 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships will be held at Piha, near Auckland in New Zealand from January 20 to 28th.
Announcing the team, Midge Wesson, of national governing body the British Surfing Association (BSA) said: “Selectors have taken the results of the British nationals into account as well as tour rankings, and that way we have been able to assess the athletes’ ability to rise to the big occasion and perform under pressure, as well as their consistency over the competition season. As well as individual results and rankings, selectors have also taken into account attitude, preparation and professionalism.”
The team that will represent Great Britain at the World Junior Surfing Games in New Zealand is:
Under 18’s Alex Baker (Croyde), Matt Chapman (Jersey), Nathan Elms (Jersey), Beau Bromham (Croyde).
Under 16’s Miles Lee Hargreaves (Bournemouth), Jobe Harris (Bude), Harry Timpson (Newquay), Liam Turner (Bude).
Girls under 18’s Gabi Rowe (Looe), Tassy Swallow (St Ives), Lucy Campbell (Woolacombe), Laura Crane (Croyde).
Also named as reserves for the under 18’s are Tom Good (Newquay), and for the under 16’s Luke Dillon (Newquay).
As part of the BSA’s on going commitment to development of surfing Talent several other surfers have also been named to join the team in their UK based training sessions. These are: Under 18’s: George Picking, Josh Piper and Seb Smart and Under 16’s: Harry De Roth, Will Bailey and Patrick Daniel. The 3 surfers selected for the under 16’s all surfed the Under 12’s and impressed the selection panel with their maturity and ability and are seen as potential future excellent performers.
With support from principal sponsor soft drinks company Calypso, producers of fruit water brand Aquajuice 67, the team’s preparation between October and January will include scheduled training sessions and a training camp in France, before flying out to New Zealand for acclimatisation and final preparation a week before the contest.
“The selectors have had to make some tough decisions, but are confident that the team they are sending to New Zealand are the best possible ambassadors for British surfing, both in and out of the water, and we are looking forward to some good individual and team placings across all three divisions,” said Midge Wesson.
