British Junior Champions crowned at Fistral over this last weekend

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 September, 2009 : - - Junior surfers from all over the UK came to Fistral beach this weekend for the chance to earn the title of British Junior Champion.

Saturday presented some quite challenging conditions in the form of onshore, 3ft, choppy waves, so selecting the right wave was important. The event kicked off with the Under 18 Girl’s division, which saw some good surfing from Zoe Sheath and Holly Donnelly, both girls moving into the semi finals with convincing wins.

The Under 14, 16 and 18 Boy’s divisions were hotly contested this year, and Round One saw packed heats of talented young surfers. Stand outs of the day included George Pickings, Jobe Harriss, Liam Turner and the Jersey boys who all put in great performances.

The future stars of surfing look to be coming from the youngest division when they took to the 3ft, glassy waves on Sunday morning .The Under 12’s Division this year was very competitive with some impressive surfing from Harry De Roth, Alex Gibson and Will Bailey, who, along with Angus Scotney all made the final. It was Harry who eventually came out on top.

The under 14’ Boy’s final was won by Bude’s Jobe Harriss, and after a closely contested battle, it was Harry Timson who took second.

The under 16 boy’s division saw some great surfing from the four finalists, Bournemouth’s Miles Lee Hargreaves started and ended the final with strong waves which earned him the title, beating Beau Bromham into second. Nathan Elms also put in a strong performance.

Despite some good performances from many of the Under 18 Girls, it was Gwen Spurlock from Swansea who dominated, and eventually won the Under 18’ Girl’s title. Confident surfing from Croyde’s Laura Crane saw her take the Under 14’s Girl’s title, with Jaide Lowe taking second place.

The Under 18’s Boys final was very competitive, with 1st place being battled out between Alex Baker of Croyde and St. Merryn’s Toby Donachie. George Picking, who had seen off some talented surfers over the weekend, couldn’t quite find the same rhythm he needed for the final. Nathan Elms, in his second final put in a solid performance to take 3rd. However, the day belonged to Toby, who surfed well all weekend and pulled off some outstanding waves to take the title.

Sam Carrier Billabong Europe’s marketing manager said.
“I am really impressed with the standard of surfing at the event. Over the weekend we saw a lot of new and up coming talent.”

Paul Matthew from VW who have committed to sponsoring three British contests this year said”We are happy with how the event went. The event had a great atmosphere with good waves and clear skies on Sunday to watch the best young surfers in the country.”
