NOMINEES ANNOUNCED FOR 2009 SURFER POLL AND VIDEO AWARDS PRESENTED BY AMERICAN SUZUKI AND ULTIMATE WAVE TAHITI Jury of Experts Assembled to Select Winners of Five Major Video Categories
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 September, 2009 : - - Dana Point, Calif. — With the 37th annual SURFER Poll and Video Awards presented by American Suzuki and Ultimate Wave Tahiti just one week away, SURFER Magazine has announced the Video Award nominees. For the first time ever, five of the top Video Awards winners will be selected by a jury of surf film experts including major surf filmmakers, World Champion surfers, members of the SURFER Magazine editorial staff, and additional respected industry leaders. The magazine also confirmed Sal Masekela will return to serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the event, with Benji Weatherley returning to host the Video Awards and charismatic Hawaiian surf star Fred Patacchia Jr. joining the crew to host the Poll Awards. This year, an all new jury panel of fifteen surfers, filmmakers, and SURFER editorial staff members has been appointed to choose the winners of five major video categories, including: “Movie of the Year,” “Best Documentary,” “Best Cinematography,” “Best Male Performance,” and “Best Female Performance.” “We thought it was a crucial step to install a jury that includes several experts in surf filmmaking—this will help ensure a balanced result in these, the most important, Video Awards categories,” said SURFER Magazine Editor in Chief Joel Patterson. “The field of nominated films and surfers this year is so strong that these are decisions best left to experts, and we feel great about the feedback they gave us.” The remaining Video Awards categories (“Best Barrel,” “Worst Wipeout,” “Best Maneuver,” “Breakthrough Filmmaker,” and the big-wave award “Coors Heavy Water”) were selected by the SURFER editorial staff.
