Board lost during Waimea session returns 4 years later
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 September, 2009 : - - During big wave season on Oahu's North Shore, some surfers lose their boards in the monstrous surf. But after a reunion Sunday, one man has an amazing story of how his surfboard came back, four years later.
Waimea bay, home to the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Contest, has claimed lives, and many surfboards. Nearly four years ago, surfer Cody Shumway lost his custom, one of a kind surfboard, catching huge waves after dark.
"I was catching my last couple waves, and a sneaker set came in I didn't quite see it on the horizon because it was mostly dark, so the set actually caught me on the side and I had to take it on the head," Shumway said. "It was probably close to an 18 ft set, it wasn't a full-on 20 footer."
He never held that board again, until now. Four weeks ago, Boat captain Jim Carras saw the surfboard on a fishing vessel at Pier 36. He knew there was only one place the board could be from because of its distinctive features.
"I noticed it was a Waimea gun by the thick stringer here, only big wave boards have those big heavy stringers on there," said Carras. The crew of the boat found the surfboard about 400 miles north of Oahu, while fishing for bigeye tuna. Once Carras bought the board, he called well-known big wave rider Clark Abbey.
"I thought it was my board, so I was guessing it was my board, but soon as he told me it had wood fins, three fins, it was yellow, and Matt Wilkerson shaped it, immediately I thought it was Cody," Abbey said.
