ASP Australasian Pro Junior event

30 September - 4 October 2008

All or Nothing at the Billabong  Pro Junior Bells Beach

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 September, 2009 : - - Casuarina, NSW -- Glory, triumph and esteemed places at the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships are what faces the country’s hottest junior surfers at next weeks Billabong Pro Junior Bells Beach. As the curtain closes on another amazing ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series, the final event of the year will decide precious places at the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships – the apex of junior surfing.

Whilst the respective male and female Series titles have been sewn up by Owen Wright (Lennox Head, NSW) and Laura Enever (North Narrabeen, NSW) there is much at stake upon the hallowed shores of Bells Beach.

Needing to qualify within the top four on the ratings to be granted a spot into the ASP Billabong World Junior Championships, the Billabong Pro Junior Bells Beach will see emotions, anticipation and excitement and performances of the highest calibre running  throughout.

Having seen some of the most memorable performances in it’s prestigious history, led by Wright and Enever, the 2009 ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series will be looking to finish off with one last show-stopping event. One man who has been on his own tear this year is current ISA World Junior champion, and event number one seed, Dean Bowen (Gerroa, NSW).

Having taken out the Billabong Pro Junior event in Indonesia earlier this year and backed it up with a second place finish at last weekend’s Dripping Wet Pro Junior, Bowen is happy with how his year has turned around. “I had a really slow start to the year and did poorly in some heats I should have won,” admitted the ever critical 18 year-old. “But, having won in Bali and finished second in Manly so I’m really happy with how things have panned out.”

Sitting comfortably in second spot on the ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series ratings, Bowen is wary of the fight that will go down for the remaining three places left for the Billabong ASP World Junior Series.

With a mere 1300 points separating third and ninth, the battle between Garrett Parkes (Byron Bay, NSW), Christopher Friend (Alexandra Headland, QLD), Sam Wrench (Ulladulla, NSW), Noah Lane (Rainbow Beach, QLD), Davey Cathels (Narrabeen, NSW), Brent Savage (Casuarina Beach, NSW) and James Woods (Coolangatta, QLD) will be of the highest quality.

“I’m not thinking, or worried, about anyone else,” Bowen said. “I just want to finish the year of with a win and cement my spot at the World’s,” he added. Hailing from the south coast of NSW, a place famed for its powerful waves and no-nonsense approach to surfing, Bowen feels at home at Bells. “Bells is a wave similar to what I’m used to,” he admitted. “It suits me and my surfing – it’s cold down there often gets big, I’m looking forward to it for sure.”

Whilst in the female division, qualification for the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships has been secured already by superstar Laura Enever (North Narrabeen, NSW) and Tyler Wright (Lennox Head, NSW), but the battle for some serious monetary rewards will be amazing as $33,000 is up for grabs at the Billabong Pro Junior Bells Beach.

The Billabong Pro Junior Bells Beach will take place from 30 September - 3 October 2009. The Billabong Pro Junior Bells Beach is proudly presented by Billabong, Sony, Monster Energy, VW and VonZipper.
