First day of European Surfing Champs gets great waves    > en francais ci dessous

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 September, 2009 : - - Spectators were given a real treat on day 1 of the European Surfing Championships 2009. St Ouens bay was seen in its true glory bathed in glorious sunshine accompanied by a consistent small swell that completed round one of the Open,Senior Man, Ladies and Longboard categories. The standard of surfing was exceptional with the athletes competing across two podiums at the home of Jersey surfing, The Watersplash.

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Jersey Surfboard Club, 13 European nations are competing on Jersey’s west coast in this prestigious event. The inform French and Portuguese are been chased hard by the Moroccan and Spanish teams during these early stages but with a week to go anything can happen. Small surf has not stopped Europe’s best surfers from executing critical turns and manoeuvres.

Snappy and speedy surfing was the order of the day with Damien Chaudoy(FR), Pablo Solar(SP) and Abdelkhalek Elharim(MOROC) showing some true form.  President of the European Surfing Federation, Francis Distinguin, was happy with the conditions in Jersey. "I'm very excited because we have very good waves and I'm very happy for the competition to be in Jersey for the 40th birthday of the European Federation. "I think the standard today has been very high."

Hosting the championships Channel Island surfers battled against the best in Europe with Christian Boletta, Shelly Mcfarling and Piers Gould gaining 1st places in their round one heats. Arlene Maltman, Ben Skinner, Gordon Blake, Sam George all achieved 2nd places with only Mark Durbano and Mark Le Moignan gaining 3rd places in round 1 forcing them into the reparcharge round. Renny Gould and Scott Eastwood have straight buys into round 2 with David Speller,Scott Harben, Delia Baker and Clayton Lidster to complete round 1 of their categories on Tuesday. Competition is fierce but the Channel Island team are holding their own.

Piers Gould reflecting on his heat said “ Glad to be back in a major competition and its great to be back winning heats. I am feeling really good at the moment and ready for day 2”. Shelly Mcfarling and Christian Boletta put absolutely everything into their surfing which showed in their results.

The Teams are beginning to settle into the island style way of life with entertainment this coming Friday in St Helier with The Top Cats – the UK’s saviours of original Jamaican roots music. Fronted by the enigmatic showman Natty Bo, the band is a tour-de-force consisting of a hand picked line-up of the finest English and Jamaican musicians working today.

Originally formed in South East London in 1998, the TCs have brought a dynamic ska show into the 21st century, appealing to all ages to rock the dancefloor in any place, and becoming the talk of the town wherever they perform. Over the years TCs have played numerous Festivals including Glastonbury, Womad, Respect and the Notting Hill Carnival, and have toured the world supporting the likes of Prince Buster, Desmond Dekker, the Skatalites, Laurel Aitken, and the Trojans.

Hopefully the swell will increase during the week giving everyone a taste of Jersey’s terrific surf.

Voilà la première journée de cette Euro surf Open 2009

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 September, 2009 : - - Enfin nous y voilà. Voilà la première journée de cette Euro surf Open 2009. Avec quelques retards à l'allumage dans l'organisation du club de Jersey (qui fête cette année son cinquantième anniversaire), l'épreuve est enfin lancée, ce matin vers 9h30 (au lieu de 8h30).

L'Équipe est de toute façon prête avec un p'tit déj à 6h30, et un départ rapide derrière: Damien Chaudoy, notre «cadet» de l'Équipe est en 1ère série du surf open, et il y a toujours un peu d'inertie dans la mise en route d'une équipe de 23 personnes.

Autant le dire tout de suite; les choses se sont bien passées toute la journée; les français ont été maitres du spot, c'est ce que l'on attendait d'eux. A la fin de la journée, l'impression laissée est telle que l'Équipe est même devenue une favorite légitime aux titres individuels et par Equipe. Cela tombe bien, on est là pour ça, et toute en gardant l'humilité nécessaire, force est de constater que nos Frenchies ont marqué les esprits en déployant un surf de très haute performance.

Le hasard du seeding fait que les Français rencontreront toute la journée, et en principaux adversaires dans leurs séries respectives, les Anglais. Damien Chaudoy ouvre les hostilités, et malgré un 8,5pts sur sa meilleure vague, ne parvient pas à battre Alan Stoke, le leader de l 'Equipe d'Angleterre, mélange d'expérience et d'opiniâtreté. Damien se qualifie néanmoins pour le 2èm tour.

Les Open français vont se succéder sur ce podium principal tout au long de la journée. D'abord le capitaine Simon Marchand qui maitrise bien sa série, de même que Jean Séb Estienne dans la série suivante, qui termine sur un 8pts.

Vers 13h, c'est Romain Laulhé qui l'emporte, agrémentant sa prestation d'un Air parfaitement maitrisé. Vincent Duvignac dans la série suivante est l'auteur du « high score » du jour: 17pts et le gain de la série. Enfin, Adrien Valéro aura attendu toute la journée, pour enfin pouvoir s'exprimer contre Reubyn Ash, un anglais « volant » spécialiste des Airs. Pas assez cependant pour Adrien qui avec 2 vagues au dessus de 7pts prend le dessus.

Sur le podium 2, c'est Glenn Le Toquin qui s 'exprime en premier. Pas de souci majeur pour notre « senior man » (28 / 35 ans) qui obtient au passage le 2èm meilleur total de sa catégorie. De bon augure. Les ondines enchainent dans des vagues toujours poussives qui ont du mal à dépasser 60cm. Johanne Defay, puis Alizé Arnaud remportent leurs séries sans souci; là aussi c'est au 2ème tour que le niveau montera plus sérieusement.

Toute la journée, l'Équipe suit également les exploits de Patrick Beven sur le Quik Pro France: I-phone, connection internet, coups de téléphone à Patrick Flores, notre entraîneur national retenu bien sûr sur Hossegor, mais qui aimerait bien être au milieu de « son Equipe », etc... tout est valable pour suivre et encouragé le magnifique parcours de Patrick. On l'aurait bien vu en finale!!! En tout cas voilà qui va lui redonner de la motivation pour terminer l'année.

Nos longboardeurs terminent la journée. Les vagues sont quasi-inexistantes. Malgré tout Antoine Delpéro, notre Champion du monde met tout le monde « combo » dans sa série. Quand à Rémy Arauzo, il prend sa revanche du Costa Rica en battant le finaliste du mondial et « local hero » de Jersey Ben Skinner. Avec la manière en plus.

Journée complète et réussie. Mais comme ce fut dit lors du stretching et du speech du Capitaine, pas d'exès de confiance. Le travail est à terminer, la semaine sera longue, et difficile avec très peu de vagues prévues; d'où d'ailleurs la décision de la direction de compétition de choisir un format à élimination directe et sans repêchage à partir du 2èm tour.

 Demain, entrée en lice du Bodyboard, des masters et 2èm tour du Surf Open. On y verra plus clair à la fin de la journée. Suivez et encouragez l'Équipe de France sur: eurosurfing.org/eurosurf
