Giant Killer Patrick Beven Places 3rd in Quiksilver Pro France
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 September, 2009 : - - Capbreton -- The Quiksilver Pro France pres. by Orange finished Sunday at Seignosse wrapping-up another exciting week of surfing from the world's best surfers, the event living-up to its reputation with major upsets occurring and affecting dramatically the ASP World title race.
Coming all the way from the Moskova Trials, Patrick Beven (Biarritz, FRA), 31, No. 71 on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS), got his career best result after five days of competition where he eliminated consecutively Joel Parkinson (Gold Coast, AUS), Dean Morrison (Gold Coast, AUS) and Bobby Martinez (California, USA) en route to the Semifinals, before losing to Bede Durbidge (North Stradbroke, AUS).
“Bede (Durbidge) is a great surfer and he pushed me in a couple of average waves,” Beven said. “I was feeling really tired in that heat, I didn’t eat today and focused so hard on each of my heats. I was a bit confused out in the line-up and I didn’t catch the good ones. I was a little stressed halfway the heat and I didn’t surf as good as in my previous heats.”
Supported by thousands of spectators throughout the final day of competition, giant-killer Beven put on a show using smart heat tactics and rapid-fire backhand turns to detonate in the playful beachbreak of Les Bourdaines, last year’s ASP World Tour No. 2 Bede Durbidge putting an end to the Frenchman’s dream run in front of a massive supportive crowd.
“The crowds pushed big time in that event,” Beven said. “They were behind me and it felt so good when the crowds cheered after my waves. It is a big part of my result today and I hope I can keep that confidence for the next events on the ASP WQS. I am stoked to get the chance to show my surf and beat some of the world’s best surfers. That run today is pretty unbelievable.”
Beven became the fourth European surfer ever to advance through to the Semifinals of an ASP World Tour event today following good friends Michael Picon (Capbreton, FRA), Jeremy Flores (Capbreton/New Caledonia, FRA) and Tiago Pires (Ericeira, PRT).
“This event was a great opportunity,” Beven said. “I jumped in the draw at the last minute and I am coming from the bottom. I knew I had the level and strength to do well and that it would pay-off some time. I won quite a few major ASP WQS events in the past but that result today is the best of my career.”
Patrick Beven showed he remains one of the leaders of the new generation of world class surfers eventhough he hasn't made it to the ASP World Tour yet, giving another example of his talent and experience in France.
