Billabong Pro Junior Bells Beach starts with a bang

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 September, 2009 : - - Bells Beach -- The first day of the Billabong Pro Junior Bells Beach kicked off with sizzling competition as the best in the business blew apart the iconic Bells Beach. After a week of torrential rain and weather more accustomed to the winter months, Bells Beach turned on a magical day with the sun shining and off-shore winds lightly feathering the one-and-a-half metre waves.

Running through the first and second round of the male competition a bevy of high scores highlighted the opening day. Led by the performances of Perth Standlick (Bondi Beach, NSW), who lapped up the reeling walls, the action was of the highest order.

Taking advantage of the ‘Bowl’ whilst his rivals sat up at Rincon, Standlick racked up an impressive heat score of 14.00 (out of a possible 20) which included the highest single wave score of 8.00 (out of a possible 10). Also taking advantage of the mornings clean conditions was New Zealand trio Damien Norman, Matt-Lewis Hewitt and Billy Stairmand who all secured a birth into the round of 64.

Oscar Scanes (Old Bar, NSW), Sam Lendrum (Nord’s Wharf, NSW), Ellis Ericson (Suffolk Park, NSW) and 2008 ASP Australasian Pro Junior champion Stuart Kennedy (Lennox Head, NSW) led the New South Welsh contingent with some amazing surfing.

As the curtain closes on another amazing ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series, the final event of the year will decide precious places at the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships – the apex of junior surfing.

Needing to qualify within the top four on the ratings to be granted a spot into the ASP Billabong World Junior Championships, the Billabong Pro Junior Bells Beach will see emotions, anticipation and excitement and performances of the highest calibre running  throughout.

Seeing the competition heading towards the seeded surfers tomorrow a mere 1300 points separating third and ninth on the ratings – ensuring the battle between Garrett Parkes (Byron Bay, NSW), Christopher Friend (Alexandra Headland, QLD), Sam Wrench (Ulladulla, NSW), Noah Lane (Rainbow Beach, QLD), Davey Cathels (Narrabeen, NSW), Brent Savage (Casuarina Beach, NSW) and James Woods (Coolangatta, QLD) will be of the highest quality.

The Billabong Pro Junior Bells Beach is proudly presented by Billabong, Sony, Monster Energy, VW and VonZipper.
