Brazilians dominate day 1 of Local Motion Guaruja Surf Pro at Tombo Beach    > Portugues embaixo

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 September, 2009 : - - Guaruja Sao Paulo -- The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) Local Motion Guaruja Surf Pro saw the Brazilian surfers dominating the action in the opening day of the ASP WQS 6-Star event at Tombo Beach, Guaruja.

Heavy rain and strong winds were present throughout this Tuesday of regular waves of three-to-four foot (1-1.5 metre) in the Local Motion Guaruja Surf Pro, but with the strong and cold winds in the afternoon the conditions were challenging for all the surfers.

In the second heat of the day, Brazilian Pedro Henrique surfed one of the best waves of the Local Motion Guaruja Surf Pro so far, a 8.17 score in a long left. "It was a very difficult heat, because I was not able to get some potential waves. You have to work hard to return to the outside and I still quite tiring, I was not able to rest from my trip to Santa Catarina, so I'm even tired. But thankfully that wave came in the final and I am very happy" said Henrique.

"Tombo Beach is such a nice place. I have competed here several times when I was younger and I usually get good results here. I fit well into this waves, but every contest is difficult, each heat is different and you have to keep focus and surf well every time” completed Henrique, who now will face Brazilian Jadson Andre in the next round.

Brazilian Danilo Costa was another who ripped in the 13th heat of Local Motion Guaruja Surf Pro, Costa reached 14.27 points (out a possible of 20) in his best two waves. The Brazilian Hizunome Bettero finish in second and now will surf against three foreigners surfers in the Round of 96, the french Romain Cloitre, the Japanese Masatoshi Ohno and the American Darrell Goodrum, one of the few foreigners surfers who have qualified today.

"I surf here every day, this is my Home Town so I’m very happy to compete here. Fortunately I was able to get good waves to win the heat. I live two blocks from here, I can go there quickly, rest, eat the food that I cook every day, so this is very different from when you are on the road" said Costa, after his great perfomance at Local Motion Guaruja Surf Pro.

"For me it is a privilege to be surfing in a such important contest like this here in Guaruja. Let's see if I also take this opportunity to get a good result here, like I did last week in Santa Catarina” completed him.

Who also advanced to the Round of 96 of the Local Motion Guaruja Surf Pro was Brazilian Bruno Santos, who last year won the title in the most feared event of the ASP World Tour in the tubes of Teahupoo, Tahiti. "It was a heat of low scores, but I was able to surf two waves around 5 points in the beginning and the guys could not pass me, so for me it was a good heat. The forecast for the next few days is very good, so I really wanted to move on. Today it is difficult to find the waves but It will be better for the next days" said Santos.

Already the most surprising defeat of this Tuesday was that of Brazilian Simao Romao, who in 2008 was runner-up of the Local Motion Guaruja Surf Pro in the final against American Shaun Ward in Pitangueiras Beach. He led the heat until the final minute, when Brazilians Dunga Neto and local surfer Ricardo Silva, managed the scores to move forward. Another eliminated was Brazilian Peterson Rosa, who has the record of eight wins in WQS Events in Brazil, he finished in third in the heat won by Magno Pacheco with the Australian Jay Davies passing in second.

“Yeah, Its really slow out there, but I was lucky in my last wave, so I stocked to get through, the conditions are very tricky. This is my first time here in Brazil and I’m stocked to be here, this seems to be a very nice place and I hope we have great waves this week” said Davies, the young Australian of 22 years old who is competing in his first year at WQS Tour.

The next call is tomorrow morning at 7:30am for a 8am start.

The 2009 Local Motion Guaruja Surf Pro is presented by Suzuki Cars, with a realization of Guaruja City Hall and The Ministration of Turism and Culture of Brazilian Federal Government, with the support of Mr. William Woo and Tent Beach, Surf Trip, Surf Xpress, Cannel Bay, Pier 7 Surf Shops, and Sufresh, Vibe and Steam. This event is sanctioned by ASP South America with the organization of Sao Paulo Surfing Federation and Event Tools Promotions.

Local Motion Guarujá Pro começa na Praia do Tombo

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 September, 2009 : - - Guaruja Sao Paulo -- A “perna brasileira” de fim-de-ano da ASP South America foi inaugurada na terça-feira de chuva, frio e vento gelado, mas com boas ondas de 3-4 pés para o início do Local Motion Guarujá Surf Pro. A etapa com nível máximo 6 estrelas, que oferece premiação de 145.000 dólares e a vitória vale 2.500 pontos, marca a estréia da Praia do Tombo no calendário do Circuito Mundial WQS com 144 surfistas de 17 países. Oitenta deles competiram nas vinte baterias realizadas no primeiro dia. Logo no segundo confronto, o carioca Pedro Henrique confirmou sua classificação surfando uma das melhores ondas da terça-feira no Guarujá.

“Foi uma bateria muito difícil, porque eu não estava conseguindo pegar onda com potencial. Ta difícil até para voltar para o outside, bem cansativo, ainda não consegui descansar legal da viagem do Sul para cá, então estou cansado mesmo. Mas, graças a Deus a onda veio no finalzinho e estou muito feliz”, vibrou Pedro Henrique, que recebeu nota 8,17 dos juízes na onda que fechou a segunda bateria do dia.

Pedrinho gostou da escolha da Praia do Tombo para sediar o Local Motion Guarujá Surf Pro esse ano, pois em 2008 ele rolou na Praia das Pitangueiras, resgatando o Guarujá ao calendário do WQS depois de 12 anos da última passagem do Circuito Mundial pelo famoso balneário paulista. “Achei legal escolherem a Praia do Tombo. Já competi várias vezes aqui quando era amador e é um lugar que eu gosto. Geralmente faço bons resultados aqui, me adapto bem na onda, só que campeonato é difícil, cada bateria o mar está de um jeito e o negócio é manter a concentração a cada bateria”. Ele seguiu para completar a bateria de estréia do cabeça-de-chave número 1 na abertura da segunda fase, Jadson André, potiguar que mora no Guarujá.

O norte-americano Brent Reilly passou em primeiro lugar somando 14,07 pontos, contra 14,00 pontos de Pedrinho. Essas marcas só foram superadas por outro natalense que há muitos anos mora no Guarujá. Na 13.a bateria, Danilo Costa atingiu 14,27 pontos nas duas ondas computadas e a mellhor valeu nota 7,77, que ficou abaixo apenas do 8,17 de Pedro Henrique. O paulista Hizunomê Bettero passou em segundo nessa e vai enfrentar três estrangeiros na segunda fase do Local Motion Guarujá Surf Pro, Romain Cloitre da França, o japonês Masatoshi Ohno e o americano Darrell Goodrum, um dos poucos gringos a se classificar.

“Uma estréia em casa, surfo aqui todo dia, consegui me dar bem, pegar boas ondas para vencer a bateria e competir em casa é muito bom. Moro a duas quadras daqui, posso ir lá rapidinho, descansar, comer a comida que eu como todo dia, bem diferente de quando você compete fora”, comentou Danilo Costa. “Para mim é um privilégio estar disputando um campeonato aqui no Guarujá. Vamos ver se eu me aproveito disso para conquistar um bom resultado aqui como o que fiz agora lá no SuperSurf em Santa Catarina”.

Quem também avançou para a segunda fase do Local Motion Guarujá Surf Pro foi o niteroiense Bruno Santos, que no ano passado conquistou o título da etapa mais temida do ASP World Tour nos tubos de Teahupoo, Tahiti. “Foi uma bateria de notas baixas, mas já consegui surfar logo duas ondas médias com notas 5 e pouco no comecinho e a galera não conseguiu me passar, então prá mim foi uma bateria boa. Bom que passei porque a previsão de ondas para os próximos dias é muito boa, então eu queria mesmo é passar. Hoje está difícil, o vento atrapalhando um pouco, mas o mar pelo menos está constante, está entrando onda direto, então ta show. Se todo campeonato tivesse assim com estas condições, já seria bom”, disse Bruno.

Já a derrota mais surpreendente da terça-feira foi a do carioca Simão Romão, que em 2008 foi vice-campeão do Local Motion Guarujá Surf Pro na final contra o americano Shaun Ward nas Pitangueiras. Ele liderou a bateria até o minuto final, quando o cearense Dunga Neto e o surfista local do Guarujá, Ricardo Silva, conseguiram as notas para seguirem em frente. Outro também eliminado na estréia foi Peterson Rosa, paranaense que é recordista com oito vitórias em etapas do WQS no Brasil, mas terminou em terceiro lugar na disputa vencida pelo paulista Magno Pacheco, com o australiano Jay Davies passando em segundo.

“Foi um bom começo, mas as condições estão um pouco difíceis lá fora. Acho que tive sorte de achar algumas ondas para passar em segundo. Não venci a bateria, mas estou amarradão em ter avançado”, falou Jay Davies, que nunca tinha competido no Brasil. “É a minha primeira vez aqui no Brasil e estou curtindo bastante. Esta praia parece ser bem divertida e espero que tenhamos boas ondas durante a semana. Já me falaram muito bem daqui do Brasil e quero ver se consigo bons resultados tanto aqui como na próxima etapa que vai ser lá no Rio de Janeiro, semana que vem”, deseja o jovem australiano de 22 anos de idade.
