Girls grace the Billabong Pro Junior Bells Beach

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 October, 2009 : - - Bells Beach -- Day three of the Billabong Pro Junior Bells Beach saw the girls grace the iconic Australian beach break as challenging conditions haltered competition. With cold, blustery conditions creeping into the Victorian Surf Coast, contest organisers, and competitors alike, struggled with the small conditions and on-shore winds.

Having run through the first six heats of the female division, officials had no choice but to call a halt to proceedings. “The conditions were challenging to the say least,” said ASP Australasian Tour Manager Dane Jordan. “With so much on the line, we don’t want the athletes surfing in conditions that aren’t representative of the event.”

Expecting amazing conditions tomorrow and Saturday, Jordan is exited about the prospect of seeing places decided at the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships in fitting conditions. “With a rapidly building swell to hit the area this afternoon and tonight, tomorrow is looking as an excellent day of surfing,” he continued.

“I can’t wait to see competitors mixing it up in Bells at it’s finest for the final event of  the year.” Before competition succumbed to the holding period, the top seeds in the female division showed their wares. Feeling at home in the cold was Kirby Wright (Lennox Head, NSW) who lapped up the right-hand walls of Rincon. “It was fun,” she said with a smile, having accrued a total heat score of 10.75 (out of a possible 20).

“I enjoyed myself out there and it wasn’t as cold as I anticipated,”Wright said wryly. Having come from a fantastic performance in Manly, where she finished second to her sister Tyler, Wright is looking at finishing the year with a bang in the predicted increased swell.

“It was really fun surfing against my sister although she smashed me, it was a great result for me coming into this event.” “I feel comfortable in the cold water and bigger conditions so hopefully we get the waves that are predicted, Wright finished. 14-year-old Nikki Van Dijk (Phillip Island, VIC) continued her excellent form in 2009 qualifying for a quarter-final berth with number one seed Laura Enever (North Narrabeen, NSW).

“It was tough out there, but I still enjoyed myself,” said the effervescent youngster. Having taken some much older, experienced revered scalps throughout the year, including a wildcard into the Rip Curl Pro in Easter, Van Dijk loves surfing against her elder counterparts.

“It really pushes my surfing competing against the older girls,” she quipped. “Especially here at Bells.” However, the day’s performance went to Enever who racked up the highest heat score of the day with 11.25 (out of a possible 20). Having already taking the ASP Australasian Pro Junior crown, Enever is racing towards a fitting finish to the year.

The Billabong Pro Junior Bells Beach will take place from 29 September - 3 October 2009. The Billabong Pro Junior Bells Beach is proudly presented by Billabong, Sony, Monster Energy, VW and VonZipper.
