Second Consecutive Lay Day for Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 2 October, 2009 : - - Dee Why, New South Wales -- Event officials were forced to call a second consecutive lay day for the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic with only small one-to-two foot surf on offer at Sydney’s Northern Beaches after spending the day monitoring conditions while waiting for the swell to increase.

“The surf is still small and with several days left in the waiting period we’ve decided to wait for conditions to improve,” Matt Wilson, Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic Contest Director, said. “We’re expecting a new swell to fill in over the weekend and want to wait for conditions to improve before restarting competition.”

The commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic capitalized on the opening day of the waiting period, completing Round 1 action in its entirety. Reigning two-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 21, and tour veteran Melanie Bartels (HAW), 27, lead the event’s proceedings by posting the day’s top scores while advancing directly through to Round 3.

Round 2 action will host a few big players in the world of competitive surfing, as 2005 ASP Women’s World Champion Chelsea Hedges (AUS), 25, seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion Layne Beachley (AUS), 37, and 2006 ASP World Junior Champion Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS), 23, were relegated to the sudden-death round after finishing third in each of their respective opening heats.

After falling to eventual event winner Tyler Wright (AUS), 15, in last year’s competition in Round 3, Gilmore will have her chance at redemption when the pair faces off again in a highly anticipated rematch when competition resumes.

Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic officials will reconvene tomorrow at 7am for a possible 8am start. The event holds a waiting period from September 30 through October 5, 2009 and will be webcast LIVE via beachleyclassic.com.
