Death & Injury totals rise in Padang, as well as in Samoa, & Tonga Earthquake Wiped Out Four Entire Villages, 650 buried by Landslides | Read here
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 October, 2009 : - - As many as 4,000 people could be buried under the rubble in the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes in Indonesia, United Nations officials said Saturday. Local disaster management officials put the death toll from the quakes at 535. Earlier U.N. figures that put the death toll at 1,100 were just estimates, said El-Mostafa Benlamlih, a U.N. humanitarian coordinator.
A 7.6-magnitude quake struck Sumatra on Wednesday and a 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit Thursday morning in the same region. Wednesday's quake reduced buildings to rubble in the city. People used hammers, chisels and bare hands to dig through debris for survivors and belongings. Staff at a local hospital treated the injured outside the semi-collapsed building as bodies of the dead lay in makeshift morgues.
An area that now looks like a flattened mess of destruction was, just days ago, a group of three villages. Officials believe 90 percent of the residents -- as many as a few hundred people -- were buried, just one piece of the devastation from two large earthquakes that struck Indonesia in as many days. The stench of dead bodies fills the air. Full report CNN News
Surfer has lucky escape Eric van Druten, a 31-year-old Australian surfer, said several of his friends were staying at the Ambacang and another hotel. He said he ran toward the swimming pool when the earthquake began to shake the building. "But the wall collapsed, so we had to get out. There is still a heap of people in the pool," he said.
One survivor who had been staying in Room 338 of the hotel sent a text message to relatives Friday, saying he and some others are still alive. The relatives then informed the authorities.
SurfAid launch Appeal Padang, the gateway to the Mentawai Islands and where most of the surf charter boats are based, has been seriously damaged and the death toll is more than 1,100 and there are fears that thousands more are still trapped beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings.
SurfAid has gone into emergency mode and has staff doing assessments of the needs of the people in the coastal areas south of Padang, which are heavily populated and impoverished. SurfAid had Mentawai health program staff already in Padang and they have been reassigned to emergency work. SurfAid will respond to the immediate urgent needs with medical staff and supplies. SurfAid has eight doctors and three nurses preparing medical supplies. See report

Typhoon Parma smashes northern Philippines
Typhoon Parma is bringing strong winds and heavy rain to northern parts of the storm-battered Philippines. However, it weakened and changed course as it neared and most of the country - including the flood-hit capital, Manila - is expected to escape major disaster. Earlier, President Gloria Arroyo declared a "state of calamity" and 33,000 people were told to leave homes.
Hundreds died as Typhoon Ketsana hit the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam last week. The latest storm, though, has taken a more northerly course, sparing the central areas worst hit by Ketsana, including Manila.
