Hawaiian surfers dominating at Keramas for the Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge Final
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 October, 2009 : - - Keramas River Mouth Bali -- Under a scorching sun in searing hot conditions on the black sands at Keramas River-mouth in Bali the leading edge of a new swell delivered more excellent surf as four heats of round three were completed at the Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge Final 2009.
Hawaii’s Granger Larsen lead the Hawaiian charge today on a day where all surfers revelled in the conditions with waves delivering an ideal platform for surfing’s full variety of highest quality moves. In a see-sawing round three heat against Brazilian Jesse Mendes, Larson left his best till last, finding a perfect set wave in the final minute, pulling straight into a barrel and scoring an outstanding 9.5 ride to take out the heat.
“I was getting nervous sitting in second place and into the last minute but when that wave appeared I knew it had the potential to win me the heat and I just focused on riding a great final wave and thankfully I’m through to the quarter finals” said a relieved Larsen after the heat.
Later in the day the other two Hawaiian’s in this event, Clay Marzo and Kai Barger , both won their heats to join Larsen in the quarter finals Great barrel rides were common throughout the day with Clay Marzo (HAW), Sam Wrench (AUS), Nat Young (USA) and Mustofa Jeksen (IND )all scoring some perfect long tubes.
Davey Cathels (AUS), Nat Young (USA) and Mustofa Jeksen (IND) can all consider themselves very unlucky to be eliminated today. All showed their brilliance but were narrowly defeated in round three heats that could have gone either way.
Jeksen scored the day’s second highest scoring ride of a 9.33 in his exciting and narrow loss to Hawaiian powerhouse Kai Barger who again unleashed massive bottom –to-top-turn combinations to take the final heat of the day.
A total of six heats were surfed today, navigating best possible conditions through the tides and the event is now past the half way stage. Swells and winds look promising for the coming days and organizers will maintain a quality controlled contest as we head toward quarter, semi’s and final.
