Zink Surf South Coast Pro

Hurley Champ Circuit event #6
Werri Beach New South Wales
10 - 11 October 2009

Watson claims the Zink Surf South Coast Pro

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 October, 2009 : - - Werri Beach, NSW -- Ty Watson (Currarong, NSW) today continued his affinity with Werri Beach with an amazing performance at the Zink Surf South Coast Pro. Outpointing a host of the country’s best, Watson won his second event in as many attempts at the famed south coast beach break.

“I love surfing here,” he admitted. “I won the Red Bull here only a few months back after a third in the state titles, so it’s good to be back at Werri and awesome to have a win.” Defeating Ben Short (North Narrabeen, NSW), Shane Holmes (Berkley Vale, NSW) and Shane Carroll (Avalon, NSW), who finished second, third and fourth, Watson was in stellar form – relishing all that Werri threw at him.

“I’m over the moon,” Watson said, holding aloft the $1200 winners cheque. “Conditions were tough, with the massive sweep, but I managed to get the right waves when it counted.” Having only snuck through his quarter-final with a last minute escape, Watson surfed like a man possessed, attacking the lip with his trademark flair.

Rated as the 23rd best ASP Australasian Pro Junior throughout 2009, Watson now turns his attention to the Philippines where he and his brother will compete against the world’s best. “We only found out recently, but I am so excited.” “This win will definitely give me a great confidence boost,” he admitted.

As the sixth, and final leg, on the prestigious Hurley NSW Championship Circuit, the Zink Surf South Coast Pro once again saw the state’s best surfers going ballistic in excellent one-and-a-half metre conditions. Headlined by the likes of Nick Squires (North Wollongong, NSW) and Rhys Bombaci (Kiama Downs, NSW) the race to the overall Series crown went down to the wire as expected.

However, when the dust settled it was home town hero Bombaci who emerged the champion. “I’m stoked,” he said. “To wrap up such a prestigious event at home is amazing,” he added. Having only surfed in four events out of the possible six, the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) stalwart also collected a cool $1000 thanks to Hurley. “The level of surfing on show at these events continues to rise, I can’t wait to defend my title next year.”

Having already seen epic conditions and mind-blowing performances in the previous five Hurley NSW Championship Circuit events, the prestigious Circuit is also drawing towards the business end of the year for the Cadet division.

With a showdown set for the overall Circuit title between current ratings leader Cooper Chapman (North Narrabeen, NSW) and Jake Sylvester (Bar Beach, NSW), who have been locked into an intense battle throughout the year - tomorrow will be a day not to be missed.
