Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge Final 2009 runs two Quarter-Finals before winds halt the day’s action at Keramas
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 October, 2009 : - - Keramas River-Mouth Bail; Immediate Release: Two quarter finals run today at Keramas River- mouth in Bali before a raging on-shore wind forced the event into holding pattern on a day which began with a very promising swell.
The Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge Final is all about running a superb event in the best conditions to determine a very highly credible and prestigious winner. With 18 of the world’s best pro junior surfers flown into Bali for this 10 day quality event at one of the world’s best performance waves, heats are run and stopped according to conditions with a strict no-rush policy.
The quality control aspect has been highlighted at this event with daily heats to date of 3, 3, 5, 4 and 2! “We’re here to run a super event which the best surfer can win and that’s exactly how it’s unfolding” said co contest director Andrew Stark from Surfing Australia. Stark is working closely with local Indonesian Surfing Championship (ISC) director Tipi Jabrik to ensure the event scores the best possible surf over the period.
While the on- shore wind blew in fast today, the two heats run saw plenty of explosive surfing with Hawaiian Kai Barger, the current ASP World Junior Champion, going ballistic in his close heat with Clay Marzo. Barger looked gone with 5 minutes remaining in the heat as Marzo’s fluid and radical attack saw him take a substantial lead requiring Barger to score an 8.26 to take the win.
It was then that Barger displayed his character, catching a good wave and unleashing three explosive bottom - to – top vertical turns which scored him the events highest score of a 9.5 ride to take the win. “I knew I had to get a big score so I just threw it all into that ride” said Barger. “It was fortunate that the wave lined up a little better on the reef and allowed me the scope to do more turns.”
In the other semi final Australia’s Sam Wrench took a close victory over Hawaiian Granger Larsen. Semi-final one will see Sam Wrench take on Kai Barger while the other semi-final is still to be decided. With only five heats to run in this event which has five waiting days remaining a quality finish is assured.
Quarter Final Draw at this stage: Quarter 1: Sam Wrench (AUS) 13.50, Granger Larsen (Haw) 10.60 Quarter 2: Kai Barger (HAW) 15.00, Clay Marzo (HAW) 13.30 Quarter 3: Marc Lacomare (FRA) V Brenden Gibbons (ZAF) Quarter 4: Charly Martin (FRA) V Alejo Muniz (BRA)
Semi Finals: Semi 1: Sam Wrench V Kai Barger Semi 2: TBD
