Rico Leroy & Sarah Burel Crowned 2009 ITSA World Champion in Bretignolles      > en francais ci dessous

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 October, 2009 : - - Bretignolles, Vendee France -- Rico Leroy & Sarah Burel (Lacanau, FRA), were crowned the 2009 ITSA World champion today after winning the ITSA Grade-3 French Cup N°5 in Bretignolles, France. Leading the international ratings since their recent win in the NKF WTT6* at Cocoa (USA) a couple of weeks ago, Rico & Sarah sealed the deal today closing a great year of performance to claim their maiden international title.

“The ISA title wasn’t done for us again this year even if we were in the lead before Hawaii,” Leroy said. “Today we were really focused on our heats and did not think about the title until it would be confirmed and we are just over the moon right now. We’ve had a long year competing on both ITSA World Tandem Tour (WTT) and the ISA World Title event. We had a long break in July and August and we got back to competition to focus on the Tour series, and it finishes perfectly with that title.”

Leroy & Burel, who had a great year where they placed 6th in the world (ISA) at Waikiki after clinching the ITSA Grade-3 French Cup in Biscarosse last July, were considered a favorite throughout the nine-event season that saw several exceptional battles take place including their duel with title contender Pauly & Kristl (HAW) in the final at Cocoa where Leroy & Burel took a serious lead before the final contest at Bretignolles.

“Getting the French Cup Title is also another really great thing for us,” Burel said. “We did win this contest from the beginning 5 years ago. The final event of the French Cup is always great and that wave really fits our surfing so we were looking forward to take the opportunity again and went for a big result.”

After coming close to the international ISA & ITSA crown last year (both 2nd), Leroy & Burel’s determination and talent gave them the keys to success in 2009, an exceptional year that saw the Lacanau resident come onto the frontline of professional Tandem surfing.

“To win the international (ITSA) title is great, especially here in France with all our friends and familly and it’s another step in our career,” Leroy said. “We are not sure yet where the ISA World title will take place next year and I’m trying to organize it in France but one thing is sure, we will get back on the Tour to defend our crown in 2010.”

The World Tandem Tour is now close. It was a great year with 9 events around the World. Next year the program should be as good as this year with more contests to enjoy Tandem Surfing.

Rico Leroy & Sarah Burel sont couronnés Champions du Monde ITSA 2009

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 October, 2009 : - - Bretignolles, Vendee France -- Rico Leroy & Sarah Burel (Fra) ont été couronnés CHAMPIONS du MONDE ITSA 2009 après leur victoire à la dernière étape du World tandem Tour 3*, lors de la 5 ème et dernière épreuve de la coupe de France 09. Ils avaient pris la tête du classement du World Tour après leur récente victoire au WTT6* de Cocoa Beach en Floride et ont définitivement gagné le titre aujourd’hui avec cette victoire: l’aboutissement d’une année très performante sur le circuit international.

« Le titre ISA n’était encore pas pour nous cette année même si nous étions en tête avant Hawaii, c’était notre deuxième objectif de l’année » nous dit Rico « aujourd’hui nous étions concentrés sur nos séries et nous ne pensions pas au titre jusqu'à ce qu’il soit confirmé par l’ITSA, maintenant que c’est fait nous sommes vraiment sur une autre planète. Nous avons eu une très longue année sur le circuit ITSA en passant par les ISA à Hawaii. Heureusement que nous avons eu un break d’un mois entre mi Juillet et mi Aout pour nous réentrainer et nous reconcentrer sur la fin de saison qui finit plutôt très bien avec ce titre de Champion du Monde ».

Rico Leroy & Sarah Burel ont eu une très belle saison 2009. Ils se sont placés 7 ème aux derniers championnats du Monde ISA juste après avoir remporté le WTT3* de Biscarosse en juillet. Considérés comme les favoris au titre de cette saison à 9 étapes, Rico & Sarah ont pris l’avantage aux points sur leur rivaux les plus sérieux, Pauly & Kristl (HAW) lors du WTT6* de Floride, juste avant l’étape finale de Brétignolles.

« Gagner aussi le titre de la coupe de France était important pour nous puisque nous somme invaincus sur ce challenge à 5 épreuves depuis sa création il y a 5 ans » nous explique Sarah, « La dernière étape de la coupe de France se déroule toujours à Brétignolles et ce type de vague correspond bien à notre type de surf donc nous sommes restés concentrés pour faire un gros résultat ici ».

Après avoir fait une saison presque parfaite en 2008 (Vice Champion du Monde ISA et ITSA), Rico & Sarah ont montré beaucoup de détermination pour cette saison et leur talent les a amenés au titre cette année, une saison exceptionnelle qui a vu les canaulais venir aux avant-postes du classement international.

« Gagner ce titre Mondial est vraiment génial, surtout ici en France et c’est un pas de plus dans notre carrière » nous explique Rico « on ne sait pas encore où aura lieu le championnat du monde ISA l’année prochaine et je vais essayer de l’organiser en France, mais une chose est sûre, nous irons sur le World Tandem Tour défendre notre titre la saison prochaine ».

Cette dernière épreuve clôt la saison WTT09, c’était une belle année sportive pour le Tandem avec 9 épreuves partout dans le monde. Nous espérons que le programme soit aussi alléchant la saison prochaine pour le Surf Tandem qui est toujours en développement.
