Curren Places 3rd in ASP WQS Women’s 5-Star Rio Surf Pro Int’l

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 October, 2009 : - - Lee-Ann Curren (Anglet, FRA), 20, reached the Semifinals of the Rio Surf Pro International pres. by Oakley last weekend, an equal 3rd place finish that rockets the renowned natural-footer to No. 11 on the ASP Women’s World Qualifying Series (WQS) ratings.

Curren, a multiple ASP European Women’s champion and full-time WQS competitor since 2008, showed how determined and solid her surfing was throughout a week of competition where she was able to reach the final-four before losing to excellent surfer Laura Enever (USA) in the Semifinals.

Curren’s result in the ASP WQS 5-Star event has put her back in the race for next year’s ASP Women’s World Tour qualification, the Anglet resident now having to wait on the year’s elite runners finish and see if any of the current ASP Top 17 members double-qualify through both the ASP Women’s World Tour and World Qualifying Series (WQS), guaranteeing a spot for the French surfer.

If Curren gets her elite inception, she will be the third French and European surfer to become a full-time member of women’s surfing elite and get to compete with the world’s best competitors, along with reigning ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (Gold Coast, AUS) who is a good friend of hers.

After a brilliant career start where she surfed her way up through the ASP Pro Junior division, winning the ASP European Women’s Junior title in 2006, and showed her strength and levels of surfing could match with the world’s best by reaching the Semifinals of two ASP Women’s World Tour events (Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle Hossegor and Roxy Pro Sunset in 2008), Curren is now closer than ever to qualifying for next year’s elite contingent.

Following the footsteps of ASP Women’s World Tour French predecessors Marie-Pierre Abgrall and Caroline Sarran, Curren will now have to get through a nerve-racking waiting period where her fate will depend on the results of the ASP Top 17 group who have yet to compete in three events (Peniche, Sunset and Maui) before the final list for the 2010 ASP Women’s World Tour is known.
