Tiago's Mini-Itw: The Portuguese Tiger Speaks

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 October, 2009 : - - Ericeira, Portugal -- Tiago Pires (Ericeira, PRT), 28, current ASP World Tour No. 23, grabbed the mic a few days ago to send us a few words on his current state of mind after netting his biggest result of the year in France where he placed 3rd.

Despite a 17th place finish at Mundaka, Pires is ready and much awaited for his appearance in front of his home crowds in Portugal where the Rip Curl Pro Search Somewhere will take place from October 19th, at the world famous location of Peniche. Check out words from the man...

1. Good result in France, okay one in Mundaka, is Tiago happy?
I'm happy how the things went in Hossegor, but I have to put my head down and keep working hard, cause I don't want it to end. I think you need to enjoy a good result but also, know when you have to go back to work.

2. Big league in Europe this year, how do you fee around places like France and Mundaka?
I feel really good. I had planned in the beginning of the year to have my peak form around this time, and it's really helping to be feeling fit and strong. I think it's all part of the package you need to have to create good results. Plus, the feeling of surfing at home in Europe also helps, cause we feel stronger then the others.

3. What does Tiago do when not surfing like during all these lay days at Mundaka?
I really try to keep myself the best entertained as possible, cause this long waits can make you go down on a negative path. I've been alternating from training in the gym, to go on the full tourist experience to Bilbao, to try and look for waves elsewhere...You really need to keep busy and have fun in order to keep pumped and positive.

4. What's Tiago's secret? Anything special?
I'm just more in control of my body and my mind then in the past. This year I started working with a very good fitness trainer that has created me a full training program for all the moments of the year, so I feel like I'm really aware of what's happening with my body, and it's also been keeping busy. Apart from that, I still work a lot with my sports psychologist and he go trough all the things that come up to my mind, and get ready for the near future. I really feel that I'm as complete as an athlete as you could be, and it's all making me surf more relaxed and in control.
