Big success for the 1rst SUP Festival Fuerteventura
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 October, 2009 : - - The 1rst SUP festival Fuerteventura has been held last week end Octuber 17-18 in Playa de la Sirena, Corralejo bay, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands. Organized by SUPcenter.es in collaboration with Allora OPC the first 100% SUP dedicated event was sponsored by bar La Sirena, Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Ayuntamiento de la Oliva, Belway paddle surfing,secreto del sur, paradise surfshop and protest.
The festival started on Saturday morning with registrations and free initiations, among the registered competitors were 2009 Spanish SUP champion Xavi Masdevall, male and female runner-up Eric Terrien and Ani Isande as well as many well known local riders, Stand Up Paddlers from the other islands and Spanish mainland also made the trip up to Fuerteventura for the festival.
Enjoying a nice and sunny weather, lot of people, from all ages, sex and nationalities jumped on the oportunity to try or retry Stand Up Paddling. In the afternoon, 2 races, a sprint and a long distance were organized in the Corralejo bay to offer the riders the possibility to test their skills ;
Eric Terrien won all the races in front of Xavi Masdevall, local rider and SUP board shaper Abel Cathelineau came third in the long distance race. Saturday night a tasty BBQ was offered by the bar La Sirena to the riders. Sunday started with free initiations that lasted all day, local families and tourist could, once again, enjoy the wonderful weather to have a go on SUP boards.
Meantime in the morning the registered competitors paddled up to Lobos Island to enjoy the start of the annual Lobos to Corralejo swimming race, back in playa de la Sirena they spent the afternoon demoing boards, exploring the bay, chilling out talking about SUP or watching demonstrations of canarian sports.
The festival ended on Sunday late afternoon with prize giving for all the riders
