Massive Shipsterns hits up the latest footage included in this years ASMF

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 October, 2009 : - - The world shook enough to notice that the infamous wave in Tasmania, Shipsterns Bluff awoke at it's most violent. On Monday a deep low pressure system below Tasmania created the most dangerous day surfed at the place.

All the footage was captured by Australian Surf Movie Festival director Tim Bonython. But it came at a cost. In the morning Tim arrived from Sydney with Richie Vass, Karl Attkins & Ryan Hipwood. It was cold, wet & we thought this could be a big waist of time.

But as the boys left the airport the clouds began to lift & things looked a little more prosperous. Tim & Karl jumped on Polly's boat who's got big new fast moving fishing boat & headed out there. As they arrived the clouds disappeared & the light onshore winds swung around to the North.

What also appeared to be growing was a huge moving ocean creating incredibly dangerous waves. No one out there had an easy ride. Locals Marti Paradisis, James Hollmer-Cross & Mikey Brennan did the best they could but Ryan Hipwood suffered a wipeout that almost killed him.

The mutant wave was as terrifying for us documenting on the boat as it was for the surfer. Having blacked out Richie Vass his tow partner scooped him up before going back down. Spitting blood Ryan knew he was lucky to be alive. Richie too had some horrific wipeouts, struggling to negotiate the warping steps that morphed into each wave.

All up the day had plenty of victims including myself who ended getting shut down as a rouge wave hit the boat & drenched us all which also splashed all over my camera instantly wigging my camera out to be unusable. I ended up watching the last 2 hours as a spectator but knew I nailed the best of the day.

This footage as been a welcomed addition to this years Jim Beam Australian Surf Movie Festival which begins its tour next Wednesday 28th of October at the Randwick Ritz.
