Diana Cristina Wins the South-American Under-20 Title at Billabong Surf Eco Festival | Portuguese
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 October, 2009 : - - Salvador, Bahia -- Brazilian Diana Cristina celebrated today the second ASP South-American Under-20 Title in a row. She had already won the two selectives of ASP South America in Santa Catarina and now won the title of Billabong Surf ECO Festival in Salvador.
In second place was again Gabriela Leite, who finished in second in the other two events either but she and Diana assured a place in the ASP World Pro Junior in Australia.
“Despite being without a sponsor, I have been training a lot and thanks God for this title. I’m very happy and I want to dedicate this victory to my family and to all my friends” said Cristina, who established in the final all the records of the Billabong Surf ECO Festival, with an 8,50 points wave and a 15,50 total heat points.
"I tried to stay in the best spot out there and two good waves came in my way and I surfed really well to secure my victory and the title with all the records of the event” added Cristina. In the three selectives of ASP South America, she made the final with Gabriela Leite in all, now Leite will be the partner of Cristina in January 2010 at Australia.
"Cristina is surfing a lot, she won the three events, but I'm happy anyway" said Gabriela Leite. "She really is the best under-20 surfer in Brazil, with no doubt, but I’m very happy to be in the next World Pro Junior and we will try to bring this title to Brazil. This year, I lost to her there but unfortunately she didn’t win the contest. Next year we will go with everything again”.
Diana Cristina began Wednesday dispatching Barbara Segatto and then passed through Susa Leal in the first semi-final of Billabong Surf ECO Festival. Gabriela Leite defeated Camila Cassia in the quarter-finals and the surfer from Bahia, Renata Tambom in the semi-final number two.
"I wanted so much to move to the final with Diana. But its ok, I’m still very happy with my performance here. Gabriela is also a great surfer and unfortunately I didn’t have chances to go to Australia because I didn’t compete in the first event at Garopaba. Now I will be rooting for the guys from Bahia, Franklin Serpa and Marco Fernandez. Probably the waves will get better and we will have a show of surfing here” said Tambom.
With the closure of the Women’s event of Billabong Surf ECO Festival, the focus now is on the Men’s WQS and Men’s Under-20 events who will start on this Thursday at Salvador.
