San Luis Obispo International Film Festival presents Dana Brown's 'High Water'

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 22 October, 2009 : - - San Luis Obispo, Ca -- The San Luis Obispo International Film Festival (SLOIFF) is giving surfers on the Central Coast the unique opportunity for a sneak preview of Dana Brown's new film, High Water, on Thursday, November 5th at 7:30pm at the newly re-opened Fremont Theatre in downtown San Luis Obispo, CA.

Focusing on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing on Hawaii's famed North Shore, High Water chronicles the thrills, spills and chills of the final three contests of the year, held annually between Halloween and Christmas Eve. The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is the world's premier big wave event and professional surfing's most coveted title.  Oahu's infamous shore boasts the most notorious seven-mile stretch of surf on earth, setting the stage for a competition that tests the skill and survival of the world's best surfers.

World titles and a $750,000 purse bring out world-class surfers, as well as a swell of fans, media, young hopefuls, past heroes, posers and everything in between. The rapid growth of women in surfing has added a Vans Triple Crown woman's title along with prize money of over $120,000.

Dana Brown's new film, High Water focuses on the 35th anniversary of the Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Masters contest (now the Billabong Pipeline Masters) in 2005, and features some of the sport's greats, including Kelly Slater, Sunny Garcia, Sofia Mulanovich, Andy Irons, Rochelle Ballard and Rob Machado. Giant surf and larger-than-life personalities on the Big Screen of the newly renovated Fremont Theatre are guaranteed to elicit hoots and cheers from the audience.

Built in the 40's, the Fremont Theatre in downtown San Luis Obispo is an historic art deco landmark that has been beautifully preserved and has recently undergone a sprinkler replacement and ceiling "facelift". The Fremont has been the home of the SLOIFF's Surf Nite in SLO for the past four years, as well as other Red Carpet Events during the Festival's 15-year history.

The San Luis Obispo International Film Festival is delighted to welcome back Bruce, Dana and Wes Brown, who were honored at the 2007 Surf Nite in SLO with a special screening of Dana Brown's highly-acclaimed, Step Into Liquid (2003) and Wes Brown's film, Chasing Dora (2006). Bruce Brown, father of Dana and grandfather to Wes, is best known for writing and directing the iconic surf film of the 1960's, The Endless Summer (1966). He also made a documentary about motorcycle racing that was nominated for an Oscar in 1972, called On Any Sunday.

Bruce, Dana and Wes were also in San Luis Obispo in 2008 for the SLOIFF's Tribute to legendary surf cinematographer, Bud Browne. Though not related, Bud was a mentor to Bruce when he was getting his start and Bruce joined other surfing legends at the Fremont Theatre in San Luis Obispo to pay homage to the "grandfather of surf films."

The San Luis Obispo International Film Festival is quickly carving out a special niche as a premier venue for exciting new surf films as well as great classics. Surf and filmmaking heroes Greg Noll, Stacy Peralta, Nat Young, Linda Benson, Gerry Lopez, Joel Tudor and many more have visited the Festival since its first Surf Nite in SLO in March 2006.

The Festival is thrilled for the opportunity to present this Central Coast Premiere during its non-Festival season, and only days before the 2009 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing begins on the North Shore of Hawaii. The Browns' will be in attendance and special surprise guests are expected, so stay tuned for upcoming details at slofilmfest.org

Tickets for High Water are on sale now at slofilmfest.org. Tickets cost $15 ($10 for students and SLOIFF Film Society members). Proceeds will directly fund the operations of the 16th Annual San Luis Obispo International Film Festival, scheduled for March 12-21, 2010. A portion of the box office proceeds will also benefit Rebekah Malloy, a friend of the Brown family who has recently been diagnosed with leukemia.
