Chapman’s dominate Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 October, 2009 : - - Newcastle, NSW -- The sibling duo of Cooper and Olivia Chapman (North Narrabeen, NSW) dominated the final day of the Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage at Newcastle today.

Greeted by punchy one-metre waves for the final day of competition, performance levels rose exponentially as all competitors looked to make the ‘final four’ on the leaderboard and a guaranteed place at the Ocean and Earth International Teenage Rampage to be held at Cronulla on 12-13 December 2009.

With some of the more superior juniors in the country going head-to-head it was the Chapman family who stood tallest with Cooper winning the Under 16 boys and Olivia winning the 13 girls divisions. As conditions deteriorated the premier, blue-ribbon division stepped up with event standout Jake Sylvester (Bar Beach) shooting to an early lead position following two strong waves in the final.

But, as the clock wound down it was Chapman who rocketed from fourth to first thanks to an impressive grab rail aerial into a top turn combination. “I knew I needed a good score to get in front of Jake so I went for the air off my first turn and thankfully I pulled it off and I got the score,” Chapman said.

Chapman then replicated the same combination to solidify his lead position netting a 5.67 (out of a possible 10) to move even further ahead of Sylvester. Despite a late charge by Connor O’Leary (Cronulla), who snuck into second position with a super stylish series of forehand moves on his last wave, Chapman was too strong holding on for the win over O’Leary in second, Sylvester in third and Kurtis Herman (Anna Bay, NSW) in fourth.

Chapman, who has been in devastating form of late, will start as a favourite at the Ocean & Earth International Final to be held at Cronulla in December and a busy contest schedule before the final event should see him in peak form. “Its definitely going to be a busy month with the Australian Junior Titles running the week before in Queensland, but I’m really looking forward to competing at the International Rampage Final at Cronulla,” he continued.

The under 16 girls final saw Ali Kelly (Avalon, NSW) posting a huge 13.17 (out of a possible 20) combined heat total to win the crown from Rachel Campbell (Stanwell Park, NSW), Jess Van Der Meer (Mona Vale, NSW) and Annabel Barratt (Dee Why, NSW).

The under 13 boys was a hard fought affair but it was Newport’s Sam Bond who shone above the pack winning from Merewether surfer Jackson Baker in second, Teague Robinson (Avoca Beach, NSW) in third and Luis Stackhouse (Merewether, NSW) in fourth.

The 13 Girls Final was won by Olivia Chapman (North Narrabeen, NSW) who capped off a very successful day for the Chapman family with Cali McDonough (North Curl Curl, NSW) and Noraville pair Kristen Thorn and Riley Marks finishing third and fourth respectively.
