Cornish Schools 2009 surf comp gathers Cornwall County tribe

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 October, 2009 : - - Yet again the Cornish Schools delivered contestable surf wrapped up in a festival-like atmosphere as students from around the County met at the battleground of Tolcarne Beach in Newquay to decide who can lay claim to being the top surfing secondary school in Cornwall.

The event is unique in being organised by students enrolled on the 'Surf Academy at Treviglas' sixth form course. The students ran a very smooth event with over 130 competitors in four different divisons, under 16, under 14, girls and bodyboard.

In the under 16s, 'the two Lukes' met head to head in a thrilling final that really was the cherry on the cake after some excellent surfing throughout the event. Eventually Luke Dillon from Tretherras pipped Luke Millington from St Ives. The two regular footers traded wave for wave but Luke Dillon came out on top with slightly better wave selection.  In the under 14s Harry de Roth took the win with some good surfing.

St Ives were looking strong with this important win. The girls' surfing just gets better and better every year. Tassy Swallow put in a mature display of surfing beyond her years to take the title ahead of some excellent competition. A combination of cutbacks and several floaters was enough to seal the victory.

The bodyboard division was so strongly contested with such a large number of competitors that a separate report on the 'Cornish Schools Bodyboard Championships' will be filed next week, allowing 'Surf Academy at Treviglas' students a chance to practice their report writing skills.

Thanks to a strong team effort across all categories St Ives managed to take the title this year, and were crowned Cornish Schools Surfing Champions. Ellis Attwell , Surf Academy Director, stated "a massive thanks to event sponsors Animal and Ginsters for supporting the event.

Their support combined with the massive amount of volunteer support and the commitment of the 'Surf Academy at Treviglas' students once again resulted in a fantastic contest. If you are embarking on post 16 education next September and are looking at a career in the Surfing Industry then you are welcome to join us."

The winners:
