South Coast Surf Carnival presenting the 'Biggest Catch'
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 October, 2009 : - - The countdown has begun for one of South Africa's most diverse watersports events - the South Coast Surf Carnival. Organisers have noted an exponential increase in the number of entries both locally and nationally.
The seventh edition of the South Coast Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel and Independent on Saturday has entrenched itself as KZN's dedicated wave riding event with South Africa's finest kiteboarders, longboarders and stand up paddleboarders battling it out at sea. This year's event however is tipped to be the most exhilarating one to date as organisers have added the innovative sport of kayak fishing to the programme. "To add to this year's already exciting line-up we will be introducing the sport of Kayak fishing which has been a long time coming and certainly fits into the carnival perfectly," commented event organiser Paul Godwin from Nerve Events. The skill of paddle ski fishing which has evolved into Kayak fishing has its humble beginnings in the mid- 1940's and over the years has diversified into one of South Africa's most popular angling sports. Paddle skiers have not only become accomplished anglers but craftsmen as well with many designing and constructing their own fishing kayaks. The kayak fishing element will be held in a competition format with competitors been judged on the biggest game fish catch. All competitors may only weigh in one fish with the minimum weight being 2 kilograms. Competitors can launch anywhere but must beach at Scottburgh main beach. "My aim this year has been to attract new sponsors to our sport and grow awareness for kayak fishing by staging an event where prizes can be won by everyone," commented avid fisherman and organiser Shaun Reid. Competitors will be battling it out for the generous prizes which are valued at over R15 000 in total. Entries must be in by the 1st of November and entrance fee is R200. Competitors need to ensure that they have a valid fishing license as failure will result in disqualification. Please enter online.
Entry will only be confirmed once payment has been received. For more information please contact Shaun Reid 0828398174. Another new and exciting feature to the carnival will be the Poi demonstrations which the entire family can participate in. Poi is an ancient craft which has evolved into a modern art-form with poi players in almost every country in the world. Closely associated with fire dancing and entertainment, many expert poi players have found a commercial value in poi and fire performances and created a demand for their expertise.
Poi can be practiced by people of all ages, both indoors and outdoors. It is a safe form of exercise, involving physical and mental stimulation, which is both fun and rewarding. Another activity for the entire family to enjoy is the return of the Ushaka Surf and Adventures free surfing clinics held on both days.
The clinics are open to all who would like to learn to surf and who would like go on a Stand up Paddleboard in the lagoon. The clinics are run by qualified instructors and is a great introduction to the world of surfing for the uninitiated. The South Coast Carnival is sponsored by Tourism South Coast, Jeep Apparel and Independent on Saturday.
