No one minded the fact that there was no surf

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 October, 2009 : - -  Playa Patos was Playa Flatos for the VQS Duckfish for the weekend of 17TH AND 18TH of October 2009.Usually this would mean on the Saturday morning of the event we would decide to cancel for the day and then re-asses Sunday morning early for the option to run the event.

However everybody didn’t seem to mind so we decided to make next call at 12 mid day with the tide coming in? Jaji, local people’s figure and contest director who resembles Adam Ant from the band Adam and the Ants was positive that it might be a possibility to start.

We had sixty pizza’s cooking and decided to play music and make a day out of it. The kids and parents were alike and played it out with us and enjoyed the great atmosphere. Mikel Suited up and grab his board and a flag and paddled to where third reef Patos would break if there wasn’t the three islands blocking what swell was available.

A line was formed on the beach with those willing to compete in a paddle race out around Mikel and the Flag and then back in to the beach with a short run to Mr. Santos who was the official standing by to high five the winner.

With Patos beach parking area looking dirty than the usual Spanish standards we had a contest with some prizes for the winner to collect the most rubbish in some oversized garbage bags. All seem to be going well and the parking looked clean and taken care of when I saw one group of groms coming out of the restaurant opposite the parking looking quite happy with themselves with an oversized bag full.

It was easy to see that they just clean out a few cans in the restaurant area and were unhappy that they lost for cheating but never the less they did do a good job.

We decided that we would meet early Sunday to try and start the heats. This event is the home beach of none other than the “Spanish Slasher” Gony Zubizarreta and he was on hand-to-hand out the pizzas from the Big Bazzario Moterhome to a bunch of hot hungry kids. Saturday night Thee Possums, Santi Zubizarreta (Gony’s brother) band played at the infamous Iguana Bar.

The flyer for the evening with the Duckfish himself having a drink with the Possum at the Iguana bar, very nice indeed as was the set of thee Possums finishing by throwing their instruments on the ground and Santi standing on his guitar upside down like it was a board of some sort. Thanks to Frankie and the Iguana for their support of the evening.

Sunday was like Groundhog Day and the conditions were just as small as the day before. We decided that we would run an expression session so to speak with everybody in the water at the same time for their respected division and we would do our best to find the best four waves ridden and award those with prizes.
