Islas Canarias Santa Pro Readies to Host World’s Best Qualifiers in Lanzarote

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 October, 2009 : - - San Juan, Lanzarote -- The Islas Canarias Santa Pro, an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star Prime event, is readying to host the world’s best qualifying surfers on the world famous North coast of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, from November 1 to 7.

Being fully mobile on four different locations with the main venue set-up at the consistent lefthander of San Juan, the final event of this year’s ASP European WQS Tour is expected to deliver an intense battle of titans as the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) move closer to the year’s finals while the battle rages around the world for the 2010 ASP World Tour qualification race.

After almost a decade of ASP action with several epic editions that saw the lefthand pointbreak of Lanzarote deliver classic conditions, the Islas Canarias Santa Pro will seal this year’s ASP European race, current regional ratings leader Joan Duru (Ondres, FRA), 20, marching on Lanzarote with most chances of clinching his maiden ASP European crown.

With most of the world’s best qualifiers attending the prestigious and crucial event - the Prime status offering more points than a usual 6-Star rated contest - and surf forecasters announcing good conditions in the four-to-six foot range (1.2 to 2 meter) in the middle of next week, the LIVE action webcast promises to bring surf fans an explosive cocktail of high performance surf and smart tactics.

“Lanzarote is ready to welcome the world’s best surfers and we hope the surf turns on for this new edition of the Islas Canarias Santa Pro,” event coordinator Laurenço Seis said. “Having the Prime status makes it even more special for all potential qualifiers and the battle promises to be exciting as the year is getting closer to its finish.”

With current ASP WQS No. 2 and event top seed Jadson Andre (BRA) leading the charge  along with ASP WQS No. 4 Patrick Gudauskas (California, USA) as well as Joan Duru (Ondres, FRA), the elite of this year’s ratings will battle through an international 96-Man field, looking to clinch their 2010 ASP World Tour ticket before the Hawaiian leg kicks-off the following week.

“The Islas Canarias Santa Pro is very popular on tour and it is a great honor to welcome some of the world’s best in our region’s final event,” ASP Europe Tour Manager Greg Puget said. “Many of the world’s elite surfers have come here in the past and after a couple years rated Prime, we are hoping for great surf conditions and spectacular surfing ahead.”

While the ASP WQS contingent is battling in the freezing cold weather and waters of Canada, the dream set-up of Lanzarote with 22°C waters and sunny weather should give the much awaited competition a dream set-up.

Round 1 of competition will get underway Sunday, November 1, 2009, with the call being made at San Juan in the morning.
