NSSA Southeast Open event #4 scores Ponce De Leon

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 October, 2009 : - - The 2009-10 Southeast Conference Season continued with amazing waves at Ponce de Leon Landing in Melbourne Beach, Florida this past Saturday.  The 4th event of the season faced a full day of clean conditions, leaving everyone stoked.

“The contest was at Ponce Park and the surf was a good 4 to 5 foot all day and glassy, and the waves were reeeeeaaaaaly fun,” Savannah Bradley claimed in her update email.  “These kind of waves produce the most intense and fun heats.”  Savannah clinched victories in both the Open and Explorer Women’s Divisions, boosting her lead in the ratings.

The mens standout of the event , Tanner Strohmenger, coolly and calmly claimed a trifecta of 1st place wins in Open Mens as well as both Open and Explorer Juniors.  Tanner was on a serious tear surfing incredibly strong and consistently heat to heat.  His focus on walking away with the wins was apparent all day and he was rewarded accordingly.  Great effort Tanner.

You just never know where the next talented grom is going to come from.  New member Gian Marco Oliva, hailing from the Dominican Republic, turned heads with his first ever NSSA appearance.  Gian Marco dominated the Open Mini Grom final, taking the first NSSA trophy ever to the Dominican.   He followed up making the Explorer Menehune Final, finishing 5th.  Gian was all smiles and his family is excited to return for the next event.

Members were also introduced to “Squirt” the female loggerhead sea turtle that the NSSA SE Conference has officially adopted through the Caribbean Conservation Corporation.  Squirt is our new honorary member and will help spread awareness about the threats sea turtles face nesting and surviving.  Check out Squirt and the other turtles that are tracked via satellite on the website cccturtle.org.  A full day of fun waves, great families and good vibes rounded out Contest 4.  Mahalo to our head judge Gordon Lawson for assembling yet again a great panel of judges.

Rich Price, Cam Anderson and WCT veteran Todd Holland were all eyes on the action.  Special thanks to all the parents, surfers, George Seguna, Doris Arias, DNA Energy Drink, and Stephen Kaltenbach for his keen announcing skills that are getting better every contest.  Next event is November 14/15 at Paradise Park.  nssasoutheast.typepad.com for updates.
