What if Jordy chose flowboarding instead of surfing? Saffa talent pool is deep
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 October, 2009 : - - South Africa will go down in history as the inaugural title holders for the 2009 International FLOW (Flowboarding League Of the World) Championships with three scintillating finals that carved a new era in the phenomenal sport of flowboarding.
Taking place at the opening of Wave House Sentosa in Singapore, the IFC was the first time a flowboarding contest utilised a team format. Representatives from Chile, USA , Singapore and South Africa competed for personal and team glory in multiple divisions over three days.
Qualifying rounds held earlier in the year resulted in a South African team consisting of Billy Tennant, Marta Jekot, Wes Fischer and Matt Lammers, all hailing from Durban and frequent visitors to the local Wave House. The four competed in several divisions ranging from bodyboarding to strapped and strapless flowboarding on both the smaller FlowRider® and the larger FlowBarrel®, a sheet wave that at full height throws a three metre high arc of water overhead at over 35km/hr.
The IFC team results were tallied based on individual performances, with the final results coming down to the wire: Matt Lammers' and Wes Fischer's performances in the Flowboard Strapped final would determine if South Africa would take home the gold. Lammers' second place and Fischer's fourth was enough to guarantee a win. Fischer also gathered enough individual points to be crowned Men's World Champion.
The event is intended to be an annual competition and will grow to include teams from around the world as Wave House venues open doors around the world.
