Islas Canarias Santa Pro Called Off on Day 1, Good Surf Expected
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 November, 2009 : - - San Juan, Lanzarote – The waiting period of the ASP WQS 6-Star Prime Islas Canarias Santa Pro kicked-off today in Lanzarote in the Canarian archipelago, unfavorable winds and small surf forcing event officials to postpone the start of competition.
With strong on-shore winds and waves in the three-foot (one meter) range not allowing any competition on Day 1, a few competitors still paddled-for a warm-up session to get used to the line-up and get into competition mode.
“We were execting average surf today and with solid waves coming for the middle of the week, we decided not to run any heats today,” Islas Canarias Santa pro event director Laurenço Seis said. “It is looking very promising despite the winds and we are hoping for spectacular conditions Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.”
Offering more ratings’ points due to its Prime status, the Islas Canarias Santa Pro is one of four remaining Prime events on this year’s ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS), a crucial stop for those still in contention to qualify for next year’s ASP World Tour where the world’s best fourty-five surfers battle for a shot at the undisputed ASP World title.
With good hopes of getting Round 1 underway tomorrow morning as the swell direction and size are expected to improve for the main venue of San Juan, a 100-metre lefthand reef-bottom point break, the pressure will rise fast as top seeds and outsiders will meet directly in much expected battles.
Apart from the exciting ASP WQS ratings’ race in which the Islas Canarias Santa Pro will have a crucial role, the ASP European champion will be crowned this week as well, current regional ratings’ leader Joan Duru (Ondres, FRA), 20, having a firm grip towards the crown.
“Joan (Duru) is still on his way from Canada where he got a 9th but he will be here on time to wrap-up the ASP European season,” ASP Europe Tour Manager Greg Puget said. “He has the best chances to win his maiden regional title this week and hopefully seal the deal for his 2010 ASP World Tour qualification if he makes the final rounds.”
A call will be made at 9.30 AM tomorrow Monday, November 2, 2009, at the main venue of San Juan.
