Towner never stops

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 2 November, 2009 : - - For the last 2 months Laurie Towner has been non stop travelling and chasing swells all around the place. I was lucky enough to catch up with Laurie just before he has to fly out to Hawaii for a 2 month stint over there.

So lets start at the beginning. Your first stop was America. Where abouts did you go ?

I was in America for about 2 weeks. I was staying at San Clemente with Dane Ward and Wade Goodall was there too. We did a trip to Vegas as well while we were there.

Where you there just for fun or for a reason ?

We were there for the premier of the new Billabong movie " Still Filthy ".

You guys get any waves and also how did your vegas trip go ?

We surfed pretty much every morning out T street which is Danes local and we got some fun ones there. Nothing specail just alot of fun. The vegas trip was really fun. We only went there for one night which was good cause I could see myself going pretty mad there. I ended up winning $600 on the roulette and blackjack tables which I was stoked about. It was such an awesome little adventure to go to vegas cause I have never been there before.

After the America trip what did you do ?

I came home for about a week and hung out with my girlfriend, trained, fished, surfed and just caught up with mates. Within about 5 days of being home I got a call up that there is a big swell hitting WA and I was leaving the next day to go there.

Right, so how long where you in WA, what where the waves like and who did you go with ?

I just went over by myself. This was a bit of a solo mission which I usually dont do. I hired a car at Perth airport and drove down to Rowan Ainsleys house. I stayed with him for about a week and we got some really good waves. We surfed Cow bombie about 30 foot and onshore but alot of fun to tow into. Also got pumping north point at about 6-8 foot. Got some of the best beachie barells of my life while I was over there as well, but I cant tell you where that was cause its a secret spot. It was a spur of the moment trip and  we scored some amazing waves.

So after that adventure did you go home or go somewhere else ?

Straight after WA I flew to the Central Coast to hang out with my main shaper, Dylan Longbottom, for about a week.

What did you get up to there ?

I did a fair bit of surfing there. Got some good waves with local charger, Jughead out a secret spot which ive surfed before and everytime ive surfed it it has been pretty good. Also shaped my own board while I was there. It turned out pretty good as well. It is a 3 flyer fish. I havent rode it yet cause I got a whole heap of new ones off Dyl and have been trying all of them out.

So I'm guessing you went home after the central coast ?

Nope. From there I got a call up for a trip to South OZ with a group of Billabong grommets. I was there for about a week just surfing with them and shooting and filming. We were down at the mornington peninsul. We didnt get any epic waves but just some fun beachies. Myself, Tim Jones and local kid Josh Schumacher snuck off to Joshes local around the Streaky Bay area. This is where we got some really fun beachies without anyone around.

So after this trip surely you got to go home ?

Yep. I have been home for about a week now and loving it. The waves have been really small thou.

So what ahve you been doing since you got home ?

Well its not long till I have to go to Hawaii so I have been getting stuck into my training. Been going to our local pool alot and doing laps and also been soft sand running and dune running to get my cardio back up there before I go. Also been taking my thundercat boat out alot and doing some whipping in with mates in the small stuff.

What, no Fishing ?

Oh yeah and some fishing as well. Got a good sized jewfish the other day down at back beach. A dead whale washed up in the middle of the beach and there was alot of activity in the water where it had washed up. So fishing in that area was awesome for awhile. There where also alot sharks around waiting for the tide to bring the whale back out to the water so they could rip into it.

Well thanks for filling us in on your last 2 months. you sound like a very busy guy and good luck over there in hawaii.

No Worries. I'll let you know how my Hawaii season goes.
