Wahu Surfer Groms Comps to Kick Off in Newcastle – Entries Still Available

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 November, 2009 : - - CALLING all ‘Micro-Grommets’.....The Wahu Surfer Groms Comps are about to change the colour of summer with the first of seven events kicking off in Newcastle next weekend.  

Formerly just in Queensland, five states (Qld, NSW, WA, SA and VIC) will now host the exciting, all-grommet affairs, which have divisions catering for the mirco groms (U/9) to the big kids alike (U/15), and is all about providing a fun, but competitive environment.

The crew at Surfing NSW have been inundated with entries into the opening event across the past week, but are still encouraging budding competitors to get their entry forms in before the closing date of Thursday 12th November 

Surfing NSW Operations Manager Peter Hunt said he’s excited about the opening event of the seven round, national grommet series. “I can’t wait to see the talent of all the kids coming through the ranks of the Newcastle region,” he said.  

“The Wahu competitions bring a fresh new flavour to junior surfing comps, so no doubt the kids will be stoked to start the series with some slashing form.” For most grommets, the family orientated events represent the perfect opportunity for them to have their first crack in a professionally run surfing contest. 

Bolstering the events is the inclusion of the U/9 mixed parent assist division as well as the U/15 boy and girls bodyboard divisions. 

Apart from the surfing, there’ll be loads of other activities happening on the beach and there might even be a giveaway or two so you better get your entries in! There'll also be plenty to do between heats with Wahu footys, flyers and balls bouncing and flying around left, right and centre. The fun doesn’t stop there, with awesome prize packs awarded to respective divisional winners.  

Newcastle Main Beach is the main event location for the opening round of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps, with South Bar Beach, Nobbys and Merewether beaches backup locations.
