Peru Event License Extended a Further Two Years

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 November, 2009 : - - Lobitos, Piura/Peru - The Federacion Nacional Deportiva De Table (FENTA) has re-signed as event licensee holders of the ASP Women’s World Tour event in Peru for a further two years, promoting the return of ASP Top 17 to the country through 2011.

“We are proud to continue our support of the best women surfers in the world,” Guillermo Gonzales, FENTA President, said. “We look forward to having them return to Peru for many years to come.”

Into its third year as an ASP Women’s World Tour event, the Movistar Peru Classic presented by Rip Curl has become a staple amongst the world’s best female surfers. Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 26, former ASP Women’s World Champion (2003) and current ASP Women’s World No. 6, is a sporting icon in Peru, having transcended from practicing at her home beaches of Peru to reach the greatest heights in professional surfing.

“Surfing is way bigger now than it used to be when I was growing up,” Mulanovich said. “There is way more support and way more talent. There are a lot of kids that are ripping now days and the future looks bright.”

With deep roots in surfing’s history and a growing popularity for the sport, Peru is staged to be the next powerhouse in South American surfing.

”Surfing is really historic in Peru,” Mulanovich said. “People have been surfing for years and there is a lot of history and champions that came from here. Little by little, we are trying to put Peru back in the map as high as in the old times, when Felipe Pomar won the world title. I think that bringing more events in the next year is going to be the best thing to incentivize women surfing here and in Latin America. It will motivate the new generations to surf more and become better and to be able to watch the best surfer girls competing in Peru each year is a gift and will be the motivation for lots of girls coming up.”

The signing of the Peruvian event license is the most recent success for professional women’s surfing that has seen the Gold Coast, Bells Beach and Sydney recommit to the ASP Women’s World Tour, as well as the addition of New Zealand, in 2010 and beyond.

“We’re thrilled to have FENTA sign on as event licensee holders for another two years,” Brodie Carr, ASP International CEO, said. “Peru is a region that is ripe with wave potential and sending the ASP Top 17 there year after year aligns perfectly with our initiative to send the world’s best surfers to the world’s best waves.”

The Movistar Peru Classic presented by Rip Curl will host the ASP Top 17 from November 3 – 8, 2009.

The event will be webcast LIVE via www.aspworldtour.com
