Dewey's son Shea celebrates 50th anniversary of brand
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 November, 2009 : - - As the legendary surf brand launched by his father nears its 50th anniversary, Shea Weber wants the world to know the real Dewey Weber. The man behind the longboard, the pride and joy of Hermosa Beach, had a flamboyant personality, loved to yo-yo and would talk to someone for an hour without ever letting on that he had no idea who the person was, Shea Weber said.
"I step back and listen to myself and say, `Oh my God, you sound so skewed because you are Dewey's kid,"' the son said. "But I'm super excited about our 50th anniversary because I'll be able to get up on my soap box a little bit." To that end, the brand will celebrate in 2010 with a limited edition series of surfboards whose decks will visually tell the late Weber's life story through a series of photographs brightening from grainy black-and-white to vibrant color.
Spanning from one tip of the longboard to the other, the collage will begin with Weber as a child fishing, twirling a yo-yo, and acting as comic book character Buster Brown. The scape will transition into photographs of Weber on the water in his own distinctive style that yielded him the unofficial title as the Father of Modern Surfing and conclude with images of his 1993 funeral services in Redondo Beach.
And serving as the board's centerpiece will be the iconic LeRoy Grannis- captured photograph of Weber catching a wave off Hermosa's 22nd Street - the inspiration of a city dream to erect a bronze statue in Weber's image at a prime Hermosa gateway.
