Wahu Surfer Groms Comps set to launch at Newcastle this Weekend
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 November, 2009 : - - Newcastle -- The famous surfing beaches of Newcastle are set to be swamped by ‘Micro-Grommets’ this weekend as the first of the seven event Wahu Surfer Groms Comps series kicks off. With in-excess of 60 male and female surfers from around NSW set to compete across the nine divisions, action in the water is set to be frantic!
The all-grommet, family-orientated event is all about providing a fun, competitive environment with a focus on introducing competitors to the structure of a professionally run surfing contest.
With divisions ranging from the Under 9s ‘Parent Assist’ division, where parents are encouraged to assist their child to catch waves, to the Under 15s division, where the nations next crop of pro surfers will hit the water, all competitors will no doubt have their eyes set on taking home one of the many great prize packs on offer thanks to Wahu!
Tne such grommet is 12 year old Newcastle local Jackson Baker (Merewether). Baker, a seasoned competitor by contrast having notched up wins in several State and National level surfing events in recent years, is chomping at the bit to hit the waves this weekend for the contest.
“I’m really looking forward to competing in the Wahu Surfer Groms Comp this weekend,” said an excited Baker. “ I’ve heard from a few Queensland surfers that the event is super fun with plenty of games and giveaways all weekend.” Baker will no doubt hold an edge on his fellow Under 15 division competitors due to his carefully honed local knowledge of all Newcastle breaks.
“I really like competing here at home, I know all the breaks and I definitely feel more comfortable than if I have to travel away,” commented Baker, “I guess I’m pretty lucky especially with so many junior comps held here in Newcastle!”
Apart from the surfing, there’ll be loads of other activities happening on the beach with plenty for competitors to do between heats with Wahu footys, flyers and balls bouncing and flying around left, right and centre. However the fun wont stop there, with awesome prize packs awarded to respective divisional winners.
Newcastle Main Beach is the main event location for the opening round of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps, with South Bar Beach, Nobbys Beach and Merewether Beach backup locations. For daily event location please call the Surfing NSW Event Hotline after 6.30am on 0458 247 212.
Entry places are still available across all divisions. To enter, go to surfingnsw.com.au for an entry form or contact the Surfing NSW Office on (02) 9349 7055.
