HB Pier is rocking with a pumping 4-6 foot Northwest swell for latest event

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 November, 2009 : - - The 2009-10 Southwest Conference Explorer Season witnessed an action packed weekend with event #4 in its entirety and the make-up event #3 Men’s, Juniors and Boys divisions all competing in terrific surf on the southside of the Huntington Beach Pier.

Mother Nature came through as a potent northwest swell pumped in solid 4-6 foot waves to Surf City’s center stage and our competitors were hungry to capitalize on the excellent conditions.  HB’s notorious onshore winds never made an appearance as calm winds and smooth sea surfaces prevailed throughout the two-day event.

Explorer Men’s division leader Christian Saenz was in devastating form at his home break, especially on Saturday where he dropped two perfect 10 scores.  The much-focused Saenz won Saturday’s event #4 final and then continued to dominate Southside’s “Pier Bowl” lefts on Sunday where he claimed another victory in the event #3 make-up.  Taylor Clark was the honorary “Iron Man” of the event putting forth tons of energy and logging mega hours of heat time in both the Explorer Juniors and Boys divisions.

Clark brought on an outstanding performance winning both event #3 and #4 Juniors finals while also placing fourth and second in the Boys finals #3 and #4 respectively.  This was great practice and momentum for the 14-year-old Encinitas standout as we will most likely be seeing him make a solid run for a National title in 2010!  Clark’s back-to-back Junior’s wins will put him within striking distance of the ratings lead going into mid-season with double finalist Mason DiRieux still holding on to the number one position.

Kanoa Igarashi was fired up for the contest in his home turf and was in-tune in the Explorer Boys division nailing back-to-back victories.  The double wins will boost Igarashi to the top of the Boys leader-board.  The level of the Southwest Explorer Menehuene division is red-hot this season with three different surfers winning the first three events on the 2009-10 schedule.  At this contest, the spotlight was on Griffin Colapinto who made a big impression with the judges.

The talented San Clemente 11-year-old charged Southside’s outside bombs linking solid top to bottom turns to claim his first career NSSA victory.  Rick Takahashi continued his perfect streak with a sensational string of three straight victories in both the Masters and Seniors divisions.  In the Super Seniors, Tim Senneff has been unbeatable claiming his third straight.  Patrick Schlick utilized his muscular frame in the big conditions posting a near perfect 9.9 wave score en route to his third straight victory in the Duke division.

The Doherty sister act enjoyed another successful contest showing with Lani sealing her third straight victory in the Explorer Womens and younger sister Kulia taking her second straight in Explorer Girls.  Lani will retain her place at the top of the Womens ratings and Kulia will take over the number one spot in the Girls.  All races should heat up when the 6-star rated Explorer event #5 rings in the new year on January 2-3, 2010 at San Diego’s Mission Beach!

COMING UP IN CALI:  Southwest Open Season action returns to San Clemente for the 6-star rated event #5 at Church on November 14-15.  The following weekend, the Open will head up to Newport’s famed 54th Street for event #6.
