Event airs on NBC's World of Adventure Sports

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 11 November, 2009 : - - Foothill Ranch -- Watch the fairytale journey to victory of Australian surfer Sam Wrench at the 2009 Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge on NBC’s World of Adventure Sports this Saturday, November 14th at 2 p.m. EST (11 a.m. PST).

The segment, featuring extraordinary contest footage, athlete insights and a behind-the-scenes look at the Oakley compound in Bali, will air on NBC Sports with a re-air on Universal HD on Nov. 19th.  Check local listings for channels and times.

The segment follows the unique event as it culminates in Bali, Indonesia, awarding a $75,000 prize purse, the largest in junior surfing. Only 18 of the best junior surfers from around the world earned spots into the Final event, by qualifying in first or second at one of six qualifying events (Australia, USA, South Africa, Brazil, Japan and France) or earning one of six coveted wildcards. Heats were spread out over the course of eight days, during a 10-day contest window, ensuring the best possible conditions were captured.

Wrench, who earned his ticket into the event as a last minute substitution, clinched the win and the $20,000 first-place check -- a poignant outcome as he had recently lost his sponsorship. En route to the victory, Wrench ousted current World Junior Champion Kai Barger (HAW) in a Semifinal matchup and Marc Lacomare (FRA) in the Final. Alejo Muniz (BRA) was another big contender and finished equal third after being defeated by Lacomare in their Semifinal heat.

World of Adventure Sports is an action-adventure sports series airing on the NBC Sports network, hosted by Pat Parnell. The show features an array of adrenaline-inspired feats and adventurous sporting events from around the world. Anchor events are complemented by behind-the-scenes features on athletes, expeditions and the world of action-adventure sports.
