Quick talk with Nat Young by Freaksurf Mag
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 November, 2009 : - - Nat Young (Usa) coming from Santa Cruz, is the next Big Man of US surfing. This freaky boy is still a junior, but what a style, what a competitor.
After the Slater, Lopez, Beschen, Ward, he could be the man, with Dane Reynolds, that the USA is looking for. And he's just proved it by claiming the Cold Water Junior at home in Santa Cruz. This year was his first year on Wqs, but get ready to see him on the top before than expected.
Freaksurf Mag : Congratulations for your victory during the O'Neill Cold Water Classic California at home ! tell me about this incredible week end.
Nat Young : Yah this was definately a good end to my week. I lost in the main event and was pretty bummed, but I am stoked to have won the junior.
FSM : You were the 2008 O’Neill Cold Water Classic California champion and the 2007 Oakley Pro Junior champion, what his your secret in cold water ?
NY : My only secret is local knowledge. I know which waves to catch and where to sit.
FSM : What does this victory represent for you ?
NY : This victory is a good end to my year. Hopefully I can keep my momentum going into the world juniors.
FSM : This Cold Water Series are amazing and savage, it seems to be the real hostile surf search, what do you think about this Championship by your sponsor ?
NY : Yah the Cold Water Series I think is a cool series. No one else is doing anything like it. And especially not going to the places where O'neill is holding these events.
FSM : Now let's talk about this first year on the WQS ?
NY : I guess you could say this year was my first year on the QS. I did a couple events over seas, but i wasn't trying to qualify. When I feel my surfing is good enough, then I will make a real push to qualify.
FSM : What about the new World Tour ?
NY : I Think the New Tour sounds great. People on the CT will make more money. And it is just less complicating having one ranking system.
FSM : It's time for the Triple Crown, back in warm water and big conditions, you got no seeding, how do you feel ?
NY : I'm just doing these contests for fun, If I do good then it's just like icing on the cake.
FSM : Do you have fear in big conditions, we've just seen a big wipe out and an injury with another big junior, Owen Wright .
NY : Yah big conditions are definately gnarly. One of the reasons i'm here is to get comfortable in them.
FSM : What does the Triple Crown represent to you ?
NY : This is pretty much the grand finale of the year. Where all the best surfers compete. And where all the media is.
