NSSA West Coast College Season scores epic surf in HB
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 November, 2009 : - - What a blessing in disguise. When the fog rolled in at Blacks Beach during College event number one, who knew that the rest of the contest would be surfed in impeccable 4’-6’ waves. That’s what happened when the teams converged at Ninth St. for College Event #2 in Huntington Beach.
That’s not to say that the surf at Blacks wasn’t bad either. Both Saturday and Sunday were around the 4’-6’ foot range and glassy. Unfortunately, fog made it impossible to finish event #1 at Blacks.
The first couple of days at Blacks there were a few highlights worth mentioning. For instance, SDSU’s Andrew Gahan was off to a great start posting a 7.0 for two vertical front side hits on Saturday and coming back Sunday to obtain an 8.33 for a radical hit driving his board into a cut-back, followed by a floater and a huge ending re-entry.
UCSD’s Kokoro Tomatsuri also had a solid wave with two vertical backside blasts resulting in a 7.5 average. Nick Suhadolnick from Mira Costa’s Red team eased through his second round with a 7.5 and a 6 for a combined heat score of 13.5. Matt Chellimi from UCSB’s Gold team also cruised through the second round with three backside blasts earning an 8.5 and a reverse 360 posting a 5.5.
The highest scoring wave at Blacks however went to Cameron Pappas who had a rail carving gouge, an off-the-lip, and a huge standard air to finish with a 9.5. In the women’s quarter finals, Allie Brown and Erica Cook stole the show Allie had a two turn wave that earned an 8.0 and a single turn wave that received a 6.0. Erica Cook posted a 6.5 for two god turns assuring her advancement into the Huntington portion of the event.
When we moved to Huntington the waves were “going off” with a 4’-6” with some bigger sets out of the northwest and some of the waves were perfect! For sure, Ninth Street was at its best! The 2009 NSSA College Mens National Champ Marty Weinstein from UCSD missed advancing in event one, he came out with a vengeance in event #2. Marty went on to win event #2 with the best single turn I have EVER seen in all my years of judging NSSA events (which is over twenty years).
Marty took off on a huge set wave, floated a giant section outside, raced down the line and finished with an inverted, tail-release, upside down re-entry for an almost unanimous 10.0. Marty also backed it up on a wave with two critical backside turns earning an 8.0. Before Marty was able to get things going in the final, Nick Suhadolnick opened the heat with a 7.5. Nick hit the lip, followed it up with a figure-eight cutback and finished with a reverse 360. However Nick couldn’t find a solid scoring back-up wave and finished in second.
In the College Women’s division, SDSU’s Allie Brown cruised to the victory in event #1 but suffered a loss in round one of event #2. In event # 2 College Womens final, Saddleback’s Erica Cook received a 5.5 for a solid backside slash in the hook that would be enough for the win. Lily Howard from UCSB and Rikki Alley from CSULB both surfed super good and were able to take home a trophy in both events!
In the College Longboard final of event #1, UCSB’s Cole Robbins was on his game and ripped his way to first but made an early exit in the semi’s of event #2. Point Loma’s Troy Mothershead and UCSB’s Kevin Osborne surfed impressively in both events with long critical nose rides and progressive rail carves. Both surfers scored some hardware in both events. Troy earned an 8.5 for a figure eight cutback into a stylish hang ten on the nose and another hang five throughout another critical section to seal the deal in event #2.
The College Team ratings are tied after two events with SDSU and UCSB trading off first and second in event #1 and #2 respectively. SDSU came on strong in event #1 placing five surfers in the combined finals. Andrew Gahan and Hawaii transplant Drew Irons placed first and second with team captain Tyler Smith placing forth in event #1 and Allie Brown scored huge as well for SDSU with a win in the College Womens. Their longboarder Mick Rodgers also placed in the College Longboard final helping SDSU claim the victory in event #1.
UCSB came back with a vengeance in event #2 with Matt Chellemi and team captain Colin Anderson placing in the College Mens final and Lily Howard helped the team take the win by placing in the College Womens final. The surfing in both events was super good and I can tell it’s going to get hot and heavy for the teams going into event #3 which will be held on December 5-6 at Ventura Harbor. See you there!
