Surf Solutions stoked with project
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 November, 2009 : - - After a 3 weeks coaching project on the North Shore of Hawaii the Surf Solutions athletes are now settled back on European soil. Led by coach Joel Gray and Photographer Alex Williams the 4 Irish and 1 English surfers enjoyed a steady stream of swell and sun and managed to surf the majority of the main waves on the North Shore. The daily routine consisted of specific coaching drill sessions, surfing as many different breaks as possible and all supplemented with evening video analysis.
Photographer Alex Williams was shooting daily and commented: “This was my 35th visit to Hawaii and one of the earliest in the season. We scored really good waves and good weather with hardly any other surfers around.”
Nicole Morgan, Damien Conway and Iarom Travers all headed back to the West coast of Ireland with a lot of surfing and new experiences under their belt. Lone English grom James Taylor hails from the wave starved Bournemouth area of the UK and perhaps surprised the most with his ability to adapt and learn in the more serious waves. “Hawaii was an amazing experience, intense at times and tranquil at others, it showed me the pure, original side to surfing, and its good! I’ve brought such confidence in the water back from Hawaii. I feel it’s a must for any budding surfer wanting some action - go to Hawaii and get kegged, yeeeeeeeew!”
Ronan Oertzen was crowned the King of the Rock for his performances and crucially improvement over the 3 weeks. He flew back to Ireland with these words. “Hawaii was amazing. I think I learned more about my surfing in those three weeks than I would have done in a year at home.”
Surf Solutions Head Coach Joel Gray: “This was another very successful project in Hawaii. I just think it is so valuable for young surfers to get out here and get involved. Just being here is a huge learning experience. From a coaching point of view we do quite a bit of technical detection and correction but overall Hawaii is about putting the surfers in the right conditions at the right time and seeing how they adapt and cope. I could not be more impressed with this years’ crew.”
