Ibon Amatriain represents Europe at ‘The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 17 November, 2009 : - - - Having already clocked some massive swells in Europe this winter, Ibon Amatriain will now have to keep an eye on the weather charts in the North Pacific! Ibon has secured a place on the highly coveted invite list for the most respected big wave event on the planet – ‘The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau’.
The event, now in its 25th year, only runs when conditions reach the minimum 20ft size requirement. This year’s event starts its 3-month waiting period on the 1st December and will have a prize purse of $98K. As always the location is the infamous Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Hawaii, a natural amphitheatre for the world’s big wave surfers. ‘
The Eddie’ is held in memory of the waterman and Hawaiian surfing legend Eddie Aikau, who pioneered big wave surfing and was one of the first lifeguards at Waimea, yet died tragically trying to save others.
Ibon Amatriain earned his slot after groundbreaking big wave performances year after year. He is renowned for Tow-In surfing at spots like Playa Gris, Planeixa and Schrodinger’s Left and has discovered and surfed more spots than most European big wave riders. Ibon has been nominated numerous times for the XXL biggest wave of the year and was an alternate at last year’s ‘Eddie’ event.
Now, having been chosen as a true contender, perhaps the best is yet to come. In Hawaii they say, ‘the Bay calls the day’. Whenever that day is, you can be assured the Basque charger will be ready and the first to go!
Ibon is sponsored by Quiksilver and Pukas Surfboards.
