"It will be a lifestyle resort with surfers in mind"
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 November, 2009 : - - Gold Coast businessmen Tony Cannon and Tony de Leede have splashed out $8 million to create a surfers paradise in a Coolangatta resort tower. The duo, operating through Paradise Property Developments No 3, bought the Bahamas Resort for $6 million earlier this year and are spending a further $2 million in refurbishment.
They aim to give the beachfront property a facelift and relaunch the nine-storey building as a surfers resort before the Quiksilver Pro, which starts in late February next year. Mr Cannon said the company had commissioned acclaimed Italian architect Giovanni D'Ambrosio to redesign the ground-level pool deck and the penthouse suites on the upper levels.
"It will be a lifestyle resort with surfers in mind," he said. "There is a niche on the Coast because it is such a surfing mecca. "We want to offer somewhere to cater more for the international surfers and travellers. "A lot of the holiday apartments on the Gold Coast frown on surfers because they wander through the accommodation with their boards and wet feet."
The 22-unit beachfront building, at 144-146 Marine Parade, is being reconfigured to provide 18 rooms, with a dedicated surfers entrance, lockable board storage area and a communal area by the pool with daybeds and a guest-only bar. Mr Cannon said the changes would result in a range of accommodation for surfers and overseas travellers from all walks of life.
The rooms from levels two to seven will receive new furniture and fresh paint, while the two whole-floor penthouses will be gutted and re-fitted with an Italian theme. The exterior of the building will be repainted and rebranded. "We are rebranding the whole building, but we have not finalised any plans for a name," said Mr Cannon.
"We hope to have it ready for the start of the Quiksilver Pro. We are pretty much on program and providing there is not too much rain we should meet that target."
