Maya Gabeira signs on with the Wasserman Media Group
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 November, 2009 : - - Carlsbad -- Wasserman Media Group is excited to announce that Maya Gabeira, one of surfing’s most influential big wave surfers, has signed with the company for athlete representation.
Gabeira, a native of Brazil, started her career five years ago and at only 22-years-old is already known as the best female big-wave surfer in the world. Due to her skill and courage in the water, Gabeira is the new record holder of the largest wave ever surfed by a woman measuring at 45 feet high. This accomplishment caught the mainstream media’s attention where she was deemed as the “Super Woman of Big-Wave Surfing” by the Los Angeles Times.
Gabeira’s unbelievable talent has earned her recognition amongst surfing and mainstream sports professionals. This year she was honored at the ESPN’s Espy Awards earning the Best Female Performance in Action Sports Award, as well as at the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards where she claimed the Girl’s Best Overall Performance Award for the third consecutive year. She is currently the only female surfer in a lead contender position for top honors at the 2010 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards to be held in September.
“Maya is a phenomenal talent with a tremendous amount of crossover appeal. She excels in a historically male dominated sport and as a result has built a huge fan base in Brazil, as well as in the surf community at large. We look forward to building upon that base and increasing her persona both here in the US and globally” commented Steve Astephen, Wasserman Media Group’s Principal of Action Sports.
Gabeira’s sponsors include Billabong, Red Bull Energy Drink and Oakley.
